Remote Desktop and DirectX workaround?

Hello,

We're pretty addicted to Remote Desktop here. It works great, several of us frequently log in from home to work. However, we have a new program that relies on DirectX to draw video -- some security camera software. I know, RDP and DirectX don't mix, but I'm not looking for 30fps video. I just want to be able to see a frame or two a second!

Is there any program that can force DirectX to revert to some basic software renderer or something similar?

Fortunately, VNC happens to work with the camera software. Unfortunately, VNC is not nearly as full featured as RDP. Plus trying to use the two together makes things complex pretty quick.

Thanks,

LC

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you see on your machine, if the Security Camera Software is running and displaying correctly on the Computer you are remotely connected with?

Are there any settings that you can use under the "Options" tab and the "Experience" tab?

Like I said, excuse my ignorance.

In this particular case the software crashes with some obscure error. It's not the best written software in the first place, so that's not really typical of incompatible applications.

Some other video-centric applications that I've used show black windows or will report errors about a lack of "overlay" ability.

Officially, Remote Desktop does not support some portions of DirectX. Including most of the video portions. Thus my hope that there is some sort of hacky workaround.

What I find puzzling (OK I'm easily puzzled) is that I can Remote into another machine, using Remote Desktop, while that other machine (I am connecting to) is displaying my WebCam output, and I can then see that live picture on the machine I am using to connect to the Remote Machine.

I suppose WebCam software is pretty basic compared to what you are running, but isn't the principle the same?

It depends on how the software was programmed. I guess your webcam doesn't use the same DirectX features as the security camera software I'm trying to get working.

You'll usually see the same problem if you try and watch a DVD over Remote Desktop -- at least I do.
