That's what I just read on the bumper sticker on the back of a car parked on a street in Seattle.

What? Do they mean it?

Why do today
that which may not need to be done tomorrow [ponder] --me

Maybe they mean that everyone is guilty OF racial profiling until proven innocent?

Alex

It's a magical time of year in Philadelphia. Eagles training camp marks the end of another brutal season of complaining about the Phillies.

2 possibilities, from my reading
1) It's to provoke thought upon the issue.
2) They mean it.

IMO, most likely the former, but it might misfire, despite the best of intentions.

Oh, that's how I read it...I didn't even see the other meaning at first. Hmm. Either way, why put that on your car? Strange to me.

Do they mean what?

It is clearly (to me, anyway) a commentary on the ethics (or lack thereof) of racial profiling.

The "Guilty until proven innocent" is offered as a definition.

I figure it's like wearing a gang color, a fraternity jersey, a letterman jacket or painting your body your team's colors at a football game. It's an outward sign of group affiliation.

That way, it can transmit information (that you are claiming membership in a particular group) without having to frame parseable utterances.

-Huh?

I'm not sure I even understand what the thing means anymore... Are they for racial profiling, or against it?

Sure racial profiling can be a bad thing and lead to discrimination, but it can also be a good thing and lead to arrests.

After all, nobody gets on the case of the TV crime thriller show that when faced with a serial killer says,
We're looking for a white male in his mid-thirties, probably lives alone...blah-blah, yadda-yadda...

The statement is against racial profiling, the point being that if you are a victim of racial profiling, you are presumed guilty of something based on your race, not that you did anything wrong.

They don't have to put words on the bumper sticker that make sense.

But don't waste a bunch of processor time on this one. If you interpret the sticker as a statement about the owner, rather than a statement about politics, the meaning of the sticker is no more important than the giant "L" on some kid's letterman jacket.

I agree with that. The sticker is obviously meant as a statement against racial profiling. Perhaps it should include an emoticon for the satire-illiterate.

If you don't understand why someone would be against racial profiling and wish to discuss that, I would suggest a new thread in STC.
