I am also from the telecom background, but I have found that using the RAS 5.0 from the support.avaya.com website is the best way to backup/and restore in case you goof up! If you use the phone, which is faster, make a log of every change made so you can undo any goof-ups!
The consultant's stock answer is, "Well, that depends..." ;-) If you have a Partner ACS 4.x or higher, you can use the software you download from Avaya on the Remote Admin port (76) on the software card.. If it's a Plus or II, you may need an upgrade before you can use RAS. Hopefully, you at least have an ACS 3.0 with a backup/restore card installed.
Before you make any changes, and assuming the system is already running properly, run the backup function (#124) from station 10 or 11. It only takes a minute or so. Then, at least you can run restore (#125) if you make a mess. If using RAS, retrieve and save the system information before you start changing things. And as johnnybb1 said, keep good records of everything you change so you can back it out if you need to.
A direct link for the RAS 5 download is:

Ok, I must agree! You should use the #124 program each major change that is done. This is most important when you are troubleshooting so you don't have to initialize and start all over!
I am doing site profiles on several phone systems across the US for a customer. Can anyone tell me how to retrieve the software version of the Lucent Partner phone system?
