Any ideas as to why when I log into my Solaris 2.8 box using a standard telnet/vt emulator my .profile is run but if I login via Exceed using an xterm, my .profile is NOT run?

in your home directory, open the file named .dtprofile.

At the end of the file, uncomment the last line. Do not allow any leading blank spaces. Then completely exit Exceed and log back in.

I don't have a .dtprofile in my home directory. Maybe that's the problem?

could be. The default is to not run your .profile when logging in with Exceed (and X windows). Here is the line:

DTSOURCEPROFILE=true

Create a simple file with that statement (it's the only uncommented one there), save the file. Make sure it is owned by your user name and group and the permissions are set to 755.

Then log all the way out of Exceed and then back in.

We also use Exceed to connect to our SUN servers. When using the client wizard and setting up a connection session, the "parameters" option is wrong if you want to execute the .profile.

The default in the parameters is "-display @d&@;".
We had to change that to "-display @d&@ -ls".

This can be changed after the fact by using the "Xsession" program, highlighting the connection you want to edit in the top "Available Programs" windows and double clicking it to bring up a details window.

Hmmm, tried changing the "parameters". It didn't seem to help. Thanks anyhow.

Acutally, I tried it again, the parameter should read:

" -display @d -ls "

That parameter worked. Now my .profile runs when I log in.
