I have a couple laptops from the same person that they run very slow, the user complained that the first laptop ran very slow so we got her a new one a IBM T30 but she complained again that the new one ran very slow again, I took a peek at her old computer and ran System monitor and noticed that the cpu is running at 39 to 100% I terminated all tasks and still running high, checked for viruses and other program but came out empty. Has anyone had this problem is there a virus or something.

Thank you

There was an update a while back that slowed computers down, but I think it was mostly for Win2K or NT.

Could it be that the registry is corrupted??
If they are running win9X/ME you should be able to run scanreg /fix

Also check MS config. Disable all startup items (win.ini, system.ini, etc)then reboot the machine and re-enable these items one at a time till you find the problem. Also go into safe mode and make sure ther is no duplicate or corrupted drivers in the device manager.

If this has happened to the same person two times in a row I am willing to bet she is installing something from that long list of "Well, I know it's not work software, but I really need this ________ software one here, funny how every computer I put it on gets really slow"

You could always give hera third one and see if it shows back up with the same problem :)

I would check the Add/Remove programs and Start menu to see if anything blatently non-standard has been installed. It could be that something she has installed is locking up or causing one of the system process to lock up. When you looked at the Task Manager, which process was responsible for the CPU load?

I have problem with one of my clients where a bunch of users end up installing spy bot software without knowing it. I would down load Spy Bot Search and Destroy (it's free) and see if there is any of these programs on her system. You should be able to find the program using google. Hell, I even get this stuff on my system and I am very guarded when on the Internet.

Also, make sure Microsoft's "Find Fast" is disabled in msconfig. McAfee Virus Scan bogs down both of my computers. There are lots of things that can cause it.
