Does anybody here have experience with the Process Control function of Gentran:Server for Windows NT?

I'm investigating ways of how I might be able to extract useful data out of the sytem without having to query the SQL tables. I've created a new session/event in Process Control (GDW_Document_Rpt), but even the parameters I've chosen to issue me a daily report doesn't offer much. Instead of a list of transactions the system passes, I'd much rather have a daily summary (total 810's, 850's, by trading partner, etc.). Are any of you aware of Gentran being capable of producing something like this or will I have to resort to another reporting method (Crystal Reports maybe?)

Thanks

What I did, was create an access database that is linked to the Tables. From there I created my own user reports. Such as being able to search for a document (Invoice, PO, etc). Doing date searches, acknowledgement overdue reports, Vendor reports and etc.

jfgonzalez,

I did the same as what tohmer is saying -- created access databases that utilized linked tables to the gentran database. You can easily do the type of reporting that you mention -- summarizing the number of each type of document. However, you cannot query any info within a document because that data is encrypted.

Crystal Reports can do the job for you. I'm using Crystal for the simlar purpose. Although mine is integrated with the accounting system. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that complicated creating a report in Crystal just by grabbing the incoming or outgoing flat files within Gentran. See INTOUT; TRANSIN; TRANSOUT folders in GENTRAN Commerce Connection directory. If you are importing and exporting files, see the flat files in IMPORT and EXPORT folder within Gentran (consolidated flat file for each: inbound and outbound)
Hope this helps.

Kind of new at this but I had the thought of creating my own reports using Crystal but I ran in to a road block when I was asked for a password to access their gentran.mdb(?)file.
When I called Sterling for the password I was told that customers were not given that information.
Really annoyed me...maybe I should go back to TrustedLink.

archerr,

Sounds like you have Gentran Director. If you upgrade to the Gentran Server product your database will use either Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle, at which point you will have full access to the database and tables.

Yeah I know...My company won't spring for the bucks for the network version of GenTran.
Just thought there was a way around it.
Thanks
