Problems with cat3 running parallel with cat5 5

Hi,

We've just moved offices and because of financial constraints, I did the cabling myself. To each network point, I ran 2 * cat 5 cables (for networking) and 1 * cat 3 cable 2 pair (for phone).

When I took the face plates off at the old office, I discovered that they had run Cat5 connections for the phone as well, and that the jacks in the plates were set up for cat 5.

Needless to say, the cat 5 - cat 5 works fine. However, while we have dial tone on the phones (it is a digital phone system), we get a "clicking" sound interference on the phones when we are using them. It is also not possible to conference in a 2nd line.

I would hate to have to run cat 5 to all the locations again - running it in the first place was a real pain.

Anyone have any ideas? Should I replace the cat 5 jacks with Cat 3? Should I set different pin assignments? Should I shoot myself?

Thanks for any help.

AHHHHH! I went crazy tryin 2 sort this out, lol but let me just add..If u are modular(jack)to modular jack (into the pbx )you need to reverse the wht/blu(to red) blu/wht(to green)wht/org (to yellow) org/wht (to black). This is assuming the pbx takes modular cords for port connectivity if the pbx allows for direct connect of a phone to port testing(using standard crossover line cords

The problem does not persist when plugging a phone into the KSU......I still have not resolved the problem - I've had other network issues (not cable related), which have taken my time recently. I'm hoping to get a tech in within the next week or so, and will let people know what the resolution is.

Meredda

since the problem dosnt exist when you plug into the ksu its got to be cable or connections

for a simple soulution use a plain old phone jack , screw terminals at each end wire white/blue to green
blue / white to red
white /orange to black
orange/ white to yellow

use a standard line cord on each end one from the jack to the ksu one from the jack on the other end to the phone

start with your cat 5 cable if the problem persists try pulling a new cable either cat 3 or 5

I'm betting you can get it going this way

keep us informed.....

This is what you should have to make everything work:

4 Pin mod end
Blue pairs on 2&3 and Orange pairs on 1&4

8 Pin jack
Blue pairs on 4&5 and Orange pairs on 3&6

Unplug jack from KSU and look at the end of it with the tab facing down...pin one starts on the left.

Seems you must be using the right pins on the jacks and mod ends or the phone would not come up to begin with so it may be a polarity issue.
As a simple test, at the jack try reversing W/B with B/W if still clicking reverse it back then reverse W/O with O/W and if still clicking then go back (dont reverse Orange pairs back to original state) and reverse W/B with B/W again so that now you have both pairs reversed.

If you have put Mod ends right onto the cable then make sure if your cable is solid copper then you also have Mod ends designed for solid copper and not stranded copper.
I have also repaired problems when RJ11 Mods were plugged into an RJ45 jack, mostly because the outside of the RJ11 mod pushes the outer pins out of their groove inside the jack or the pressure does not allow for the 4 pins to make a clean contact.

Good luck
