I have two routers with IP address
router 1 - 10.10.1.235
router 2 - 10.10.3.230

I have connected the two routers in a switch.

My requirement is, i want a set of users to use router-1 and other set of users to use router-2.

My problem is, my router-2 work for nearly 15 minutes and doesnot work after that. When i ping 10.10.3.230 from my pc, i get request time out.

When i restart the router-2 it works again for nearly 15 minutes.

Please help me to use both the routers in my network.

Thanks in advance,

S.Duraiappan

So you simply want 2 networks? How many users? What kind of equipment (vendow, models, etc---switch and router)???

Burt

Sounds like you need to replace/repair router2. It should always answer a ping unless you've configured it not to.

"We must fall back upon the old axiom that when all other contingencies fail, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." - Sherlock Holmes

Have you configured both with the correct subnet mask? 255.255.255.0 - ?
Have you designated on of them to use the other as the default gateway?
Are both running a router protocol such as RIP?

Better advice could be given if you explained your proposed network topology.

Thanks for your replies.

I have nearly around 50 users and only 10 users will be using internet. I want to split one set of users to router-1 and other set of users to router-2.

Router-1
Make : UTSTARCOM
IP: 10.10.1.235
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Router-2
Make : UTSTARCOM
IP : 10.10.3.230
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

I dont give any values for Default Gateway.

This is the log of router-2

Please help me how to configure the routers.

S.Duraiappan

You have both routers on the same network. Change the subnet mask on each one to 255.255.255.0 and report back.

Alternatively, if you prefer, or it is easier for you change the IP addy of one router to 192.168.1.1 and the other to 192.168.3.1 and both subnet masks to 255.255.255.0

My entire network is having subnet mask as 255.0.0.0.

If i change that in router-2 shall i need to change the subnet mask in the PCs?

I think it is a tedious job.

Anyother options?

Duraiappan

The simple fact of the matter is that you cannot have more than one router on the same network. You split the networks using the subnet mask. The PC's should be receiving their IP addresses automatically from a DHCP server. So you should only have to reconfigure that. If you don't use a DHCP server and are configuring IP addresses manually then I don't see that you have a choice.

Why not? Some clients use router1 as DG, some use router2 as DG. I have this running, but I admit it's for a special situation (executives have their own pipe to the internet).

Whats that special situation?

Please let me know how to use the two routers in the same network?

I suspect that your configuration is correct, since the router works for 15 minutes after a reset. Can you replace router2 with another router to eliminate the possibilty of hardware failure?

It is odd that you don't set a default gateway on the routers. As far as I know (I'm not a router guy, like some others in this forum) you should set the DG to whatever value your internet provider gave you to use.

By "special situation" I meant that it's unusual to need such an arrangement. The way I work it is to have the user's Default Gateway point to the router I want them to use.

Normally people configure vlans in a L3 switch for this situation. That's why it's unusual.

Lawnboy,
I have already tried the same with another switch. I get the same problem. Then only i understand that there may by some problem in the network settings.

I observe using router-2 without connecting the telephone line. The router-2 keep on pinging for the whole day. No problem.

As soon as i connect the telephone line and broadband gets activated the router-2 doesnot work after some time.

I could understand the meaning of L3 Switch? What is that?

Layer 3 switch---it routes between vlans, and does basic ip routing.

Burt

Yes, Burt, please explain how routing VLANs will solve this problem. This should be entertaining...

sduraiappa - sorry for the delay in answering, I've been down with the flu. I'd suggest you hire a consultant to come in and help you figure out your problem. It may just be a language problem, but you're confusing your terminology, and besides I'm not a router expert. I suspect you need default gatewat parameters setup in your routers.

Two routers in the same subnet??? O...K...tell me how THAT works...

Burt

I am guessing that these routers are adsl routers with switchport modules in them. I this correct? Please explain the topology.
Lawn---a layer 3 switch that can route VLAns can SEPARATE networks, so he can accomplish users A and users B being SEPARATED. What is hard to understand? Two gateways, one for each VLAN...

Burt

Burt,
Instead of attacking me, why don't you try to help the OP? Nowhere do I see that he's trying to separate users from each other. He's trying to get one group of users on a different internet connection than the other. Something which I am doing currently.

Does the phrase "multi-homed" mean nothing to you?

Here's my 2cents...

First off, you have a problem with Router2. you'll need to fix/replace it before anything will work the way you want.

Secondly, your IP addressing scheme is horribly wrong. With only 50 users (and maybe a handful of servers), there is no reason to have anything larger than a 24-bit (255.255.255.0) subnet mask.

Thirdly, in order to send internet traffic in 2 different routes, you'll have to have 2 different default gateways on the PCs.

My recommendation -
1. change all your subnet masks to 255.255.255.0
2. put both routers on that subnet, i.e. Router1 is 10.10.1.235/24 & Router2 is 10.10.1.230/24
3. assuming you use DHCP, configure the scope for a default gateway of one of the routers (the one the majority of users will be using)
4. for those PCs that require the other internet route, you have 2 choices:
a. create a second DHCP scope with the second router as the default gateway. This will require advanced DHCP configuration (conditional scopes)
b. set static IPs in them using the second router as the default gateway, from the info you've given that will be less than 6 PCs

Dearingkr,

I checked all those things as per your reply.

Already i have the settings as mentioned by you in my routers and PCs.

Only thing is the subnet mask. You have mentioned it as 255.255.255.0 and I have used 255.0.0.0

Does changing the subnet mask will solve my problem. Please confirm. Because i have to do it to all the nodes and its a time consuming as nodes are located in different locations.
