We have a unique setup where i work. We have a CS1000M MG/CP PIV Release 5 issue 50 J +. This system started as a SL1 in 1981. for a while we had a half meridian 81 (no C) with single density blue cabinets with lots of QPC60's. anyway the power has remained the same all this time. a QCA13 power cabinet with (3) J2357 rectifiers and a J2427A-1 control board. it is time to replace the batteries. my question is can i power the entire system down, then unhook the batteries, then power the system on and run normal? or will the control board freak out because it would be looking for batteries? this would give us time to remove the old batt inclosure and get the new one in place with "little" downtime.

Do you have a battery disconnect on your system? A way to isolate the batteries from the rectifier is what I mean. If so you should be able to kill that switch and then replace the batteries and then throw the switch back on and be done with it. The A/C power will run the switch while you are replacing the batteries. It will probably give you an alarm but I don't think it will hurt anything. I haven't messed with rectifiers that old for a long time but I believe you shouldn't have to power anything down.

I don't have my old documentation any longer but I believe you had to remove a strap inside the control panel and connect sense leads from the battery string when they were installed. You will probably have to replace that strap to get the rectifiers to work correctly without the batteries.
