Yes~!?

I finally got it all together and forgot where I put it.

Singular: asterisk
Plural: asterisks

What is the definition of astericks? Sounds like a collection of hand drawn Chinese passenger-carrying carts used in a flower parade.

B'dum tish!

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all

Kinda reminds me of the episode of "The Bill Cosby Show" in which Cosby played the all-wise, all-knowing physician-father of the Huxtable Family. They had to do about 28 takes of one scene where the teenage neighbor boy kept calling him, "Doxtah Hustable"...I'm sure the kid would have loved to have put an "astericks" next to that episode.[2thumbsup]

There is of course this french comics hero, "Asterix". The name is pretty obviously a pun on the aforementioned word.. I'll give you a few other names given to the Gauls in that village : Obelix, Panoramix... Many of the others are only funny in French. I do believe the english translation makes a good job of making it funny again. :)

-Haben sie fosforos?
-No tiengo caballero, but I have un briquet.

Here are two little articles about the puns in the names of characters of Astérix books, and the difficulty of translating puns.

Puns abound in the French. Whether or not one agrees with Freud that puns are the lowest form of humour, they are certainly difficult to translate, and will not usually translate straight at all.

Asterix is a FRENCH comic book hero??? I thought he was a GERMAN comic book hero. I read Asterix comics written in German in German class. I remember some of the names being funny in German too. I've never seen a French or English version. What was the name of the druid priest?

I have only seen the Spanish version where the druid keeps his French name, Panoramix. In German he is called Miraculix, in Afrikaans Abracadabrix, in Estonian Aquavitix, in Serbian Aspiriniks, and so on. For a list of the names of the main characters in different languages see here.

The English name Getafix seems to be a translation improvement, in the words of the translator:

Asterix and Obelix remain the same, as far as I know, in all languages, but the druid Panoramix retains his French name in many other languages, and we too have the adjective ‘panoramic’ available in English. However, the name of ‘Getafix’ seemed a gift, having more than one double meaning: not only does the druid’s magic potion give the Gauls a temporary ‘fix’ (of a perfectly innocuous kind) to help them defeat the Roman aggressors, but there is also the theory that the druids of ancient Britain may have used circles of standing stones (like Stonehenge) as astronomical observatories, to help them ‘get a fix’ on the sun.
