I find profanity is difficult to create a rule for, what may be considered profane in one sentence may be perfectly acceptable in another.

with regards to masking words, if you do not know the meaning of scumblesnorter (I just made that up) then writing it as s$@&*^%£$%^&*r should mean nothing to you except to tell you the author considered it might offend.
Therefore people are getting offended because they have been told they should be not because they are.

I could just have easily written it as <insert expletive here>, in which case the reader is surely offending them-self!

of course using the Mc prefix may have scared the moderators in case they had to face the wrath of a certain purveyor of fast food.

I think the problem you had is the example words are open to debate where as the rule clearly stated that masking was not allowed.

I think that those who are "offended" by Halloween are more worried about the perceived apspects of Satanism. I am not aware of it having anything to do with "celebration of death and a time to honour the dead".
Fascinating. In some ways this surprises me because I had read that "feasts for the dead" were quite common on Oct 31st in many S.American countries, which have a high Catholic concentration. I must admit, as one who was raised without a church presence, I am rather ignorant of conventional religious mythologies. Wikiepedia, not always the most accurate of places, has a pretty good article on it that covers this aspect.

I also find the Satanism concerns to be fascinating. In order for one to practice Satanism, one must first believe in Judeo-Christian concept of Satan and the theology of the Bible, whereas almost all neo-pagan beliefs don't even have this or the related constructs of angles, demons, etc. However, this seems to be a common perception.

if someone's beliefs cant stand up to a bit of competition or cross-examination then perhaps they need re-evaluation
Well Said, a star for you.

I'm not suggesting that some celebrants of Halloween treat them as "feasts for the dead," simply that I believe that those that are offended by it generally do not use that as a reason for taking offence.

I realize that. I was responding to the comment about not having awareness of the holiday being about honoring the dead. I understand that it is the association with Satanism that many find offensive. However, the ironic part is that the origins of the holiday predate Christianity and in order to be Satanic, one must first believe in the Christian concept of God and Satan. which most who celebrate Holloween in the traditional sense don't.

It would seem that many equate the not sharing their views as having the antithesis of their views, which is probably the only way that they can really understand the concept. Where as in truth, this is not the case.

Interesting, how the words used give an impression, even if it is a false one.

Then maybe we should erase the

DOH!, I thought he was refering to the stars in the sky not behaving as he expected them to!

Bringing this subject full circle, it occurred to me this morning that all of the words in the English language that would be considered profane are things that would be considered sacred to or non-existent in a pre-Christian, pagan culture. Specifically, the profane words focus on slang for (predominately female) reproductive anatomy, excrement (fertilizer), and the concept of being cursed and going to Hell (don't have this concept).

With this in mind, these are words that according to my beliefs should not be profane. Should I be offended that others are offended by their use (joking)?

Well maybe it's me then, but I have tried to give a few people stars over the last couple of days and they didn't show?

@1DMF you are right. things have changed on TT in the last couple of days.
Each time I post a reply I get a "notification" tick and as soon as I open a forum the "unread items" star disappears from my forum list even when I haven't read all of the new postings in that forum.

If a mod/admin sees this, maybe they can look into it?????

@Noway2,

"Out of curiosity, aside from the trivial answer, why does your friend find Halloween offensive? Do they not realize that THEIR chosen holidays may be offensive to someone else?"

He finds it offensive because he truly believes it is worshipping Satan and that such people are headed for eternal suffering. He even goes so far as decorating pumpkins to be an evil act.

He does consider that the Christian days and traditions are offensive to some, but, he says, "so what?".

@tcsbiz,

Your friend has my sympathy. It is sad to see one so misguided. The true evil in this situation is the misery that he is inflicting upon himself. Unfortunately, I doubt that his chosen ignorance is curable. There is none so blind as those who will not see.

That's funny!
On a serious note, it reminds me of the time a spokesman for some elected official (I can't remember if it was the president or someone else, but I think it may have been) used the word niggardly, meaning miserly. It created such a scandal that the person even resigned their job, but shortly after when it realized what they said, things calmed down and their resignation was rejected.

The he can hardly complain when people say "So What" about things he finds offensive.
