Hi,
I have a web server and a sendmail/pop3s based email server behind a PIX 501 with one external IP. I have a problem with the email server. When a user tries to download theiremail using Outlook, the pop3s server cannot be reached.They can send outbound email just fine. I have the Outlook client configured to contact the POP server on Port 995. Tests inside the network are successful. (I can download and send email on any machine on the 192.168.1.x network)

Outlook error:
Task 'mail.mydomain.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Ping and tracert are both successful from the PC, so DNS is OK.

I seem to recall a sendmail bug that enterprets a <CR><LF> as <CR> and never gets the rest of the mail or something, are you running version 6.3(4) on your pix if not try upgrading ?

Also, I did testing inside the same subnet and the mail download is successful. So my conclusion is that it's not sendmail related. The only other variables are the Outlook config and the PIX.

Ya, well....the bug is a combination of sendmail and the pix. So try to uograde unless of course you already are running 6.3(3) minimum.

sho version
Cisco PIX Firewall Version 6.3(3)
Cisco PIX Device Manager Version 3.0(1)

I'll try an upgrade to sendmail 8.13.2 and post results

Hmm, shouldn't really be a problem. Maybe sendmail is configured for esmtp ? can you even do that ? cause then you will need to do "no fixup protocol smtp 25" on the pix.

I did:
no fixup protocol smtp 25

and then telnet to port 25 and the banner says ESMTP.

Good call! However, the Outlook client is still returning the same error. One interesting thing I discovered is that I can only telnet to port 25 using the IP address. But if I do an nslookup, mail.mydomain.com and pop.mydomain.com do resolve.

Any ideas?

I just looked at your statics and seem to remember something about using the outside interface ip address for port nat'ing making problems, try changing your statics to "interface" instead of putting the ip address of the pix in the static like i have done below, of course you have to remove them first.

static (inside,outside) tcp interface smtp 192.168.1.11 smtp netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface pop3 192.168.1.11 pop3 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface 995 192.168.1.11 995 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface http 192.168.1.54 http netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface https 192.168.1.54 https netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface 255.255.255.255 0 0
static (inside,outside) tcp interface ftp 192.168.1.54 ftp netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0

Thanks for all of your help. I am able to get the Outlook client to pull down mail now. I did two things:
1. did the no fix up on smtp port 25
2. added some ICMP echo statements

I will look at your latest recommendation to see if that further stabilizes the config.

Hi cisconewbee,

I have a similar problem, can you post the ICMP echo statements you added.

Thanks.

I am out of the office all week due to personal circumstances.
If you can wait until next week, I would be glad to help you out
