Hello all,
It so happened that I was put in charge of the office phone system (they are using Norstar Modular M8X24-DS). The problem is that I never worked with phone systems before. The system was installed long before I came in and nobody knows by whom. Naturally, no manuals and/or setup instructions are available. I found a useful link on the net ( and was able to do some minor modifications (adding mailboxes, resetting passwords, changing names etc.). I have two questions:
- First, can you tell me where do I get the information about the system (like familiarize myself with the terminology to start with. What is a "line pool" for God's sake:) before they want me to make more serious changes if need be (like adding phone lines and so on).
- Second, they want to know what phone number is associated with each line. To do that, one of the guys was picking up the lines (it was Line 7, for example) and dialed 958. The system was giving him the number for this line. The guy then "parked" the line (whatever that means) by pressing "Feature-74". Then he picked up another line (it was line 14) and repeated the process. He was able to identify lines 6-15, 19 and 20, but then it said "Park full". Is there a way to get the rest of them?
Sorry for the long posting. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Line pool is a group a lines assigned to the same group/pool. So if you dial 9 you get lines from that group/pool, if you dial 8 you get lines from that group/pool, etc.

The easiest way to identify which lines are on which port of the Norstar is with a Butt set(telephone technicians phone). You could proram lines to appear on a phone and ID them that way, and just keep changing which lines appear on the phones.

You need to get a tech manual and some basic understanding of telephony terms.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for you help. Where do I get the tech. manual? Can I download it from somewhere? Is the Butt set one of the phones we have in the office or it is something I have to get separately? Where?
Thanks again.

Kuma1234,
You can get some of your manuals from the download section at pbxinfo.com
A Butt Set can be purchased from a Cable/Tel wholesaler and sometimes on Ebay. A cheap one is about $100.00. You will also need other tools along with this to connect into your distribution frame. There are many kinds of distribution and equally many different kinds of tools to connect the butt set to them. Do you have Bix, 110(AT&T), screw terminal, or 66block? Probably the best way for you to get going here is to hire a contractor for a couple of hours of famil and education.

Arr,
I appreciate your help, thanks. I guess, that's what I'll do.

Kuma1234,

Like you I'm lurking for information having been thrust into taking care of the local telco for our sites. Anyhow,
You can get a Butt Set at your local Home Depot. HD now carries a lot of what use to be specialized telco stuff. It's usually with the network wiring/lo volt electrical.
If your not satified with the choices there go on the web to Jensen Tools, or Specialized Products. If you Google a tool say "telco punch down" etc. you should fine others that I haven't mentioned.

I've also seen a website where you can get the manuals for about $10/download. Which is a great price considering the dead trees version is about $100.

Good Luck with you new endavor and challenge.
