I have a HP Compaq 8220 laptop. I have installed windows Vista ultimate ver 6.00 (Build 6000)

The current driver is a Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Cardbus Controller - Microsoft driver Version 6.0.6000.16386

I have a number of PCMCIA cards, all of which work fine in the laptop when running on XP.

However, now I have Vista installed, 2 of them have issues.
When I put them in the PCMCIA slot, Vista starts to install the drivers, but then goes to a blue screen with no writing on it, and then reboots.

I have put the XP drive back in the laptop to make sure everything still work on that.

I have been through support with HP. They have confiemed the laptop is Vista compliant, and I have downloaded and installed all the relevant Vista service pack from the HP website Their support team have basically said just use the PCMCIA card with XP until a BIOS upgrade gets released.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks,

Have you set your machine to just stop at the BSOD and not to automatically restart?

Have you checked the manufacturer's web sites for Vista drivers?

Linney - I haven't set the the machien to stop at the BSOD, can you tell me how to do that?

I have checked the manufacturers website and have downloaded all the lastest drivers they have posted for Vista

That option should be selectable via the Safe Mode Boot Options screen.

You can permanently set it via the System Properties/ Startup and Recovery options.

Thanks, I have done that. It wasnt much help though, as the screen was blue, with no text on it at all

Will it boot to Safe Mode, if so maybe you could have a look at what is reported in the Event Viewer? You know the problem is almost certainly a hardware/driver Vista compatibility problem and until that is solved it will be difficult to move on.

frink3,

Did you ever get this to work correctly? I am having the same issues with a Dell D810 and Vista Ultimate. The blue screen does not come back with any error just a plane blue screen.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi sjandy,

The problem has been identified as an issue with the Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Cardbus Controller. There are currently no drivers for this that work with windows Vista.

I have tried a number of things including installing the XP drivers, and so far I have not got it working.

I am currently mid discussion with Microsoft tech support about this, and if a solution is found I will post it here.

Frink.

Appreciate the feedback, even if it is negative. Thanks.

Frink,

Thanks for the information... MS was my next call if I did not get anything off of a couple of discussion posts. I called Dell last on Monday and got a response back from them that there must of been something bad with my Vista install because they have certified all of the drivers for Vista for my model. I did not think that the OS install had anything to do with the issue.

Thanks, sjandy

I had this exact same problem, and it caused me much grief. I have a Dell D810 laptop. I recently upgraded to Vista. After upgrading, inserting any card into my PCMCIA slot resulted in a blank Blue Screen of Death. I have FIXED this problem by simply disabling the Texas Instruments PCI GemCore based SmartCard controller. To do this: right click on My Computer > Manage > Smart card readers > Right click the target driver > Disable.

My PCMCIA slot works beautifully again. I hope you all have the same luck.
