PC Not Talking To Router ?

OK here's the latest. My wall socket wires were crossed on a problem PC, I reconnected the wires straight through. Plugged the problem PC direct into the router (a Siemens 2604 4 port), reset and configured the PC to assign an address automatically. The 100baseT light lights up and the router gave the PC an IP address 192.168.254.4 the other 2 PC's are 192.168.254.2 and .3. The subnet and gateway addresses are correct also. So far so good! However, the PC still won't see the cable modem or the other PC's on the network.

Also, when I power off the problem PC, the port light on the router for this connection stays lit until I remove the connection from the NIC which is an internal card.

I can ping the router with the 2 connected PC's but the problem PC won't ping. It seems like the router can talk to the PC but the PC won't talk to the router???

It's a real head scratcher.

What are you trying to see? Cable modems won't appear in your device manager.

As for not seeing the other PCs on the network, what Workgroup name do you have for each PC?

The NIC light stays on because it is still getting power from the motherboard even when the computer is off.

Can the problem PC ping itself? Try "ping 127.0.0.1" and "ping 192.168.254.4"
 
What I mean is that the problem PC won't connect to anything plugged into the router. It won't see files or connect to the internet on either of the 2 PC's that are working correctly.

The problem PC does ping itself with 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.254.4.

The workgroup name is the same on all 3 units, which is the name of my company (PCS). Each computers' name is the name of the user. This is how it was set up when using the hub and 1 PC as a proxy server. Do these names need to be changed when using a router?
 
The fact that you are requesting a DHCP address and receiving it on the computer in question means that it can both send and receive packets. I would guess that the cable modem is providing the DHCP server, so that means that at least those two devices can "see" each other.

I agree with Metalizczombi, and would guess that you have some form of firewall enabled that is blocking ICMP and potentially even your Windows networking as well. Make sure that the firewall in XP (or Zone Alarm, etc.) is disabled during your testing. You can configure it after you determine that your network is fuctioning.

Can you ping the router from the problem PC? What is it's IP configuration? Can the router ping the other computers? What is the default gateway on your problem PC?
 
All 3 units OS --- Windows 98SE
PC No. 1 --------- 192.168.254.2 will ping .254 & .3
PC No. 2 --------- 192.168.254.3 will ping .254 not .2
Problem PC ------- 192.168.254.4 will only ping itself
Gateway----------- 192.168.254.254
Subnet ----------- 192.255.255.255

I did Ctrl Alt Del on problem PC and disabled all running program except Explorer. Still no communication.

 
What are the routes on each of the 3 machines? Also, try ARP -A to show the arp table. You might want to clear it on all machines - router as well. Default gateways shouldn't be an issue as they are all direct connects.
 
Subnet is 255.255.255.0 SORRY.

Problem PC ----- No ARP Enterprise Found

PC No. 1 ------- The first time I typed the command it returned info on the NIC and PC and router address. Second time it returned NO ARP Enterise Found.

PC No. 2 ------- Returned info on the NIC and address for the PC and gateway.

What is ARP and what does this mean?

Went back to the prompt and ran ARP -A and PC no. 1 returns good info now for the NIC, PC address and router address.
 
I finally got the 3rd computer connected (file, print & internet). What I had to do was go into the NIC properties (in network settings) and manually change from 100baseT to 10baseT. I didn't know I could do that and aparently with my setup, 100baseT was an issue.

I want to thank all of you for your help. I learned alot from this and couldn't have done it without all your suggestions.
