I am trying to access the Partner remotely. I can get connected. Then I go to the "retrieve system translations", then it opens a box, I click next, I enter a name, it does the remote backup, then starts the system translations, then it will get to 5% and die. I have tried to remove and reinstall the latest software. It still wont work. I am connected directly to a port on a 308 card to the modem on my xp laptop.

You may have some noise on your line, or your modem may not be connecting with good quality. Try reducing the maximum modem speed on your laptop, perhaps as slow as 2400 bps. You might also have a flow-control problem in your modem configuration.

What connection speed does your modem report when you first connect?

Right - so try backing down the connection speed to 9600, 4800, or even 2400 to see if you can get it reliably. It's a hassle at lower speeds, but better than nothing.

Modems are optimized for analog connections over miles of CO circuits and loop loss, etc. Perhaps with a local connection, the modem isn't behaving at its best.

I tried in the control panel, modem, properties, I set the speed to 2400 and got an error message.

i have frequent problems using the software. The program is VERY sensitive to line noise....

Just for fun, try calling out (connect your laptop modem directly to a CO line) and dialing into the system. Whoever answers can transfer to the remote admin modem. That way, you get the "benefit" of running the modem over a CO loop, which may get the signal levels happy.

Avoid calling out through the Partner, because the system does analog-to-digital conversion, and some quality is lost. That can cut modem performance.

You aren't the first person to have troubles connecting to remote admin. Good luck.

Hi fonedude,
Try this. Turn the system off and remove the voicemail card. Restart and connect as you normally would at your normal speed. It's a good test as more than one noisy vm has caused havoc.

I connected an external US Robotics modem instead of my internal Actiontec modem and it worked swimmingly, or fine. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I recall from long ago someone saying there was an issue with an IBm Thinkpad's built-in modem (Lucky me, I have one and have NEVER made a connection with it), so I have always used a PC-card modem, still spotty results, but that's probably because I go through the intercom.

Hi osellison,
That's what I'm using right now, Lucent modem built in. No problems.... go figure. The intercom is your best connection, look at your modem settings.
