Partner and VoIP

I recently moved into a new house that has a Partner Plus system installed. I am still trying to figure out all the features! Cablevision is roling out "Optimum voice" it is their version of Voice over IP. When I called them up, they stated that their system won't work with a PBX system. I asked them why and they really weren't sure. Is there some sort of work around or are they simply misinformed? Thanks for your help. You guys have given me a ton of information so far.

A phone system is functionally the same as a regular telephone from, say, Radio Shack. It passes dialtone to you, it sends your dialed digits out, and it lets you talk to the outside world. As long as the phone lines work with a regular phone, they'll work with a system.

Partner Plus only works with "standard" Tip/Ring Loop Start phone lines, like normal residential lines. When Cablevision rolls out VoIP, chances are, they'll use a Cisco or Motorola or equivalent box that provides you with a standard phone line, into which you could plug your regular house phone, or your Partner Plus.

The current Partner, "ACS", has an optional SDSL module that hooks directly to a digital circuit. But it must be SDSL, not ADSL, and properly provisioned by the phone company. The SDSL module would not connect to digital cable from Cablevision.

Cablevision does install a box between the two systems I'm not sure if its Cisco or Motorola. Ultimately, should I be able to use my Partner system with VoIP or is Cablevision correct that there will be problems? It seems you guys are saying it should work. I think what you were saying about the SDSL is that the latest generation of ACS's is able to connect directly to the digital input without the need for the Motorola or Cisco box. Is that correct?

Thank you very much for all your help. I'm curious what you guys consider the best way to learn how to use this system effectively. I have had some luck with the manual, but it does seem to leave a lot up to the user to figure out. I would love to just reset the system and start from scratch, but I'm afraid I may end up going crazy trying to reprogram it. The main problem is that I need to specify my in-law's line to ring on the phones in their apartment. And the rest of the phones to ring on the main number. The previous owners also did a lot of programming for the MLS-12D's. The manual seems very vague about programming buttons for speed dial and call-waiting/recall. I'm lot looking for a complete explanation on how to do these things, just where can I find out how to do these.

Hi Steve,
The Partner should work just fine. It's designed for pots lines. The worst problem you may have is with disconnect on a voice mail. (The line may not drop).
To program the buttons is easy once you realise that they just remember your key strokes & spit them back out again when pressed. For a phone number, once in program mode, press the button & dial the number, push the next button you want to program. It's that easy. For an intercom, you press the button , the left intercom button and the ext number. That's it. If you want a feature (say redial Feature 05), press the button, then the feature button and 05. Cool. To page out an extension instead of ring press the "*" before the extension number.
If you noticed, when you go into program mode (Feature 00), the extension number is displayed.
