I have an ip office 403 and a server without a parallel port. I have tried to install a PCI card in the server but without any joy. I also have a 25 pin to 9 pin convertor so the question is, can I use the Parallel license key on the serial port and how do I configure this? I assume I can't connect it directly to the DTE port of the 403?

Help!

You cannot attach a parallel device on a serial port, you should know that!
The only options ar to get a ancient pc with a serial port or swap the parallel dongle for a serial or USB dongle.
Ask your reseller.

Had that problem once and resolved by exchanging key and moving licenses to usb key.

Man, it's been so long since I've worked with the 403's and their dongles. I want to say that putting that parallel dongle on the serial port won't work, but I can't say for sure.

You should be able to put it onto a PC, and install the Key Server software on the pc. If it detects it, the there will be a red box down by the clock, if it doesn't, you'll see a red X by the clock. The keyserver software is on the Admin CD.

You could also contact a business partner, and have them swap it out for a USB dongle. You will have to mail the old one back once you get the new one.

Where are you? We have a few serial dongles knocking about :)

like Intrigrant said in not so many words you need a BP to bring your licenses over to a new license key and then hand in your old key otherwise you get charged for the new licenses.
if you have problems with VM Pro you can restart the service and it will work for 2 hours without the license then you need to restart the service again.
I have a batch file to do that automatically if you want so you have still VM until you get the license key replaced and up and running.

based in edinburgh my man. I know you cant attach parrallel to serial, it does work on an old PC but I wanted it on this server and the server wont boot with the PCI card in (god knows why, but I dont want to get into resolving that issue and getting sidetracked!). A usb or serial one would be great (serial would be ideal) is it easy to transfer the keys across or does that have to be done by the reseller?

thanks guys

ancient pc with a serial port :: should be :: ancient pc with a parallel port, any PC running XP will do

You need an ADI login to swap the keys over, so it needs to be a reseller or BP

I thought on 403 you could attach the dongle to the DTE on the back of the 403 and leave your key server in config at 0.0.0.0.

This was a long time ago and I never tried but I remember this being said maybe even in the old 2.0 engineer's toolkit.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Switching licenses may take a day or what, just use a old PC until you have a new dongle, go for a serial dongle. You can connect that to the DTE port with your 9 to 25 cable and you can stay away from Micro$oft PC's.
The IPO403 must be at 2.1+ version i believe, otherwise the serial dongle will not be recognized.

the 403 has the 25 pin serial output, but if the dongle is a parallel dongle will it work? I doubt it.

Just use a 25 to 9 pin converter for the serial dongle westi :)

Parallel does have more pins :)

the first post said that he has a parallel license key so that's what I meant with not working.
He would still need to buy a serial dongle then but USB is cheaper

How much do they even cost? We still have like 20 of each type knocking around so we have never bought one since i started working on IPO :)

$90 for serial
$60 for USB
according to the 4.2 Matrix so that is an estimate only

If you have the choice: go for the serial one.
Attached with a 25 to 9 adapter on the IPO it will give
you no trouble (you'll have to have a minimum software
level on your 403 as Intrigant stated, otherwise the dongle will not be detected.)

For the USB-dongle you'll need the featurekey software.
That needs carefull planning when upgrading with the USB dongle still attached.
