im no expert at all with computers but i was reading about overclocking so i tried to increase the cpu/frequency speed from 133mhz to 134mhz. it is now running at 1.725ghz instead of 1.666ghz. can this harm or damage any part of the cpu motherboard??? is there anything to worry about. anything else i should be changing with it??? thanks for any help/info

You will void any warranty on the CPU by OC it.
Also, it may overheat if conditions are right, and the system will become unstable.
Check to make sure it's not getting too hot(over 60 deg. C).

im not too worried about the warranty. but its at 51c rite now...im running it at 140mhz rite now and its running at 1.75ghz. i wont try pushing it till i get another heatsink fan. BUT i tried upping it to 144mhz and when windows 2000 tried to load it said i had a corrupt/missing file and it wouldnt load. i shoulda wrote down the file.=\. any insight???

You've just found out that the system becomes unstable if the frequency is increased to 144 MHz.

yeah it seams that the system is unstable when i play games at any other speed besides the default. or so thats wut it looks like. so ill just be leaving it alone.

fear not!!!

all cpu's can be overclocked with enough experince/knowledge. Your main foes are heat and power!

i reccommend you look at for a good guide. Increasing your FSB is a good place to start! Overclocking can shorten the life of your CPU. T3/\/\p()

The better way to overclock is to change the multiplier instead of the clock speed. While this does a bigger jump and you might only get one jump up it does not cause the problems of changing the frequency.
Which can be:
1.Your RAM speed is dependent on the FSB speed, so that if you run the RAM at a speed it is not rated for you will get errors. That is probably what you ran into at 144MHZ. The RAM is probably PC133 and can not run at 144.
2. Your PCI boards speed is also dependant on the FSB so that they can be unstable at higher speeds.

I assume from your original settings you were running at 133mhz with a 12.5 multiplier =1.6GHZ CPU
Try going back to 133FSB and raising the multiplier to 13.
Be careful that it does not get to hot, but I will lay odds it works. You might even go up to 13.5, if your board has that setting available.

i found the cmos settings as the comp starts up i press delete and there i found the option to change the fsb speed. but im not sure where i could be able to find the multiplyer speed...any ideas of locations or places it would be? thanks...[ponder]

You can't change the multiplier on current CPU's, unless you have done some hardware mod to the CPU itself to unlock the multiplier.
For AMD Athlon XP's: Cheers,
Jim

seems like a good idea but i dunno if ide wanna try doin that....though i prolly will [bigsmile]

My Athlon is unlocked, and I did not have to do anything to it. I have a 1.4 GHZ, maybe the newer ones are locked. The original Athlon's were locked but starting with the 1.4 GHZ they were not. But, I have not kept up, maybe they relocked them again.

Why in gods name would you want to overclock a AMD ATHLON XP 2000+. It's already running maybe at have speed for the applications built today. This CPU is so fast that there is no need to overclock it. Do you really think you'll notice a difference in speed when it runs at 1.725 ghz instead of 1.666 ? Well, I don't. Don't mess up this great CPU. You can damage or burn the baby quite easily just be pushing it's limits for that tiny bit of extra juice.
My advice: Don't do it ! Leave this baby running at it's recommended speed.

i do notice a "LITTLE" difference between the 1.666 and the 1.725ghz. but not drastic so it would be wise to run back at the recomended speed. plus im no comp expert and i dont wanna pay someone to unlock it for me. [bigglasses]

Well you are risking your system. If really you know the meaning of overclocking you would not have done that.It might be running know smoothly but I bet you it will be very short lasting. You just want destroy your CPU.Please do try to follow it up manually and you will have some thing good.

I don't know if I am write but it is the best of my knowlwdge on the question.

The little overclocking this guy is doing will not hurt anything. Sure it will reduce the life time of the PCU, but it is rated at 10 years!!! So, maybe it will reduce the life time to 9 1/2 years or 9. Big deal!!
Any CPU that is ten years old is a collectors piece and will not run a modern OS.

I say a little overclocking is fine, and as the PC gets older, like 2 years, do it a lot! What can happen? You fry the CPU and/or Motherboard. So what? After 2 years it is almost completely obsolete. It can add 6 months or so of life to PC without having to shell out more dough.

Be informed and be careful and it can be a big money saver.

thing to remember is that he isnt overclocking so that he can run word quicker or open that PS file in 2 seconds.. hes doin it so he can get 5000 3d marks or 100fps at 1600x1200 un ut2k3.

Gamers are a breed apart... no such word as 'cant' and you rig is never fast enough.

yeah he is rite...i am doing it to run my computer faster. all i use it for is Internet, Online and Counter-strike[tongue].

I have recently purchased an xp 1900+ system, with a K7S8X board (SiS 746fx chipset), and I'm new to overclocking. Any suggestions, warnings?? I would like to try to at least run it at 1700-1800 if possible. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Just leave it alone. You won't notice any difference because the processor is already blitz fast.
Don't risk burning such a expensive and great processor.
