OSPF Bounces With Nortel Devices

I don't have a lot of info just yet, but apparently this problem has been going on for quite some time.

We're predominantly a Nortel shop but we've begun to introduce some Cisco WAN router's (7609's) into our network. Prior to this we had a few Cisco Dial Servers and a CLAW/CIP router..(and maybe a few odds and ends)...not much.

Apparently we've always had issues where the OSPF adjacencies between our Cisco and Nortel devices bounced periodically. The analyst who worked on the problem a few years back had a case open with Cisco, but they were never able to pinpoint anything. They just gave up since it was only a few devices seeing problems.

Are there inherent issues between Nortel and Cisco devices with respect to OSPF??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the adjacencies are bouncing without the link bouncing then I would suspect a bug. Then again, if it's happening with different Cisco routers running different IOS levels, then maybe there is something else going on.

What IOS level are you running on the devices that are having this problem?

I'll have to report back on that. I know it's been going on for a long time (meaning - it started with old code).....and I know the routers we just put in are more recent code.

I'm mainly wondering if it's a huge issue between Nortel and Cisco that someone might be aware of. Otherwise I'll have to do some *real* troubleshooting.

Right after I made this post we started experiencing Internet problems. Once we get that squared away I'll stop back.

Thanks much...

I had an issue with some Nortel VPN/Firewall boxes a while back and we had disable local link signalling on the Cisco switches they were attempting to form adjacencies with:

router ospf 1
no capability lls

Andy - I think Cisco suggested that and it caused the problem to get worse. Other devices started losing adjacencies as well..(I'll verify to make sure though).

I haven't even looked at any traces or anything....it's been madness and mayhem for the last 24+ hours.

Thanks for the response...

I also remember an issue with the same customer which was down to a bug in the Nokia IPSO software running on the firewalls. They would only form adjacencies with 2 devices, so 3 devices per network......

We resolved this by re-engineering the network with point-to-point links between the routers and firewalls. It was a bit of pig though.

You're not working at Bishopsgate in London by any chance are you?
