History of Question:
We use CallXpress voice mail with Unified Messaging. Recieved call with an error "can not open file voice.wav" from CallXpress. Come to find out there was 100 instances of voice.wav in the users OLK folder. I am ok in deleting file and move on, but... Started to research user profiles, and I have users with 1700 files, 2700 files, 866 files, 80 files and some have under 20, in the OLK folder.

Research says:
These files should be placed in OLK temp folder but delete after user closes document then close the email.

Question:
Why are some users having it delete and some are not? I even noticed some profiles were re-created, and the new profile, has old files in the OLK??? How did they end up in the new OLK folder/profile? I am sure I can create a batch or script on logoff. I am just shocked that I am the only one finding that many files in OLK, and why MS hasnt fixed this issue. Am I missing something? Is this a user issue, of them saving it in there, even if they say they dont save it in that folder.(we all know that saying)

Is there any further information from this unrelated article? In other words does the variable addresses mentioned in it relate to the location you are looking at or is there more than one location involved?

Error opening attachments / Cleaning out the Temporary Outlook Files folder

This is one of many articles that I read. This is related as the error was what made the caller call in the problem.
However it doesnt solve my problem as the files are being kept in this OLK folder and not deleting. In my case, the file generates in the OLK folder upon a form in Outlook opening that is from CallExpress.

Also some of these users have over 1000 files in their OLK folder, so there is something more than they didnt close the attachment correctly.

Are they being synchronized from something on any Domain or Server and replenished after any deletion?

There is no sync, our users are using the cached mode in Outlook. I teseted my account, and it doesnt seem to save as many files in the OLK, however it did it twice. I know for a fact I closed the docs the correct way. The files that I watched during testing, mostly deleted automatically, however there was two that never deleted.

Are your test results repeatable, offering a pattern of circumstances in which files of a certain type and structure are either deleted or not deleted?

linney, please take no offense. If there was, I hopefully would have been able to figure this out on my own.
I cant see any patterns. I just checked 4 other staff that are using UM, and they dont even have one of the voice files saved from CallXpress. However they do have excel and word docs in their OLK folder. Total files over 125 in OLK.

Two separate computers I opened the same email with the same attachment, on computer1 saved the file, and computer2 it didnt. Going on with test, I opened another email/file, and now computer2 saved the file but not computer1.
Out of 4 emails I opened, two of them saved on two different computers. Two emails didnt save. All word docs.

Sory for bad typing/grammer, just too much fun stuff today!

No offense taken or implied, we are here to discuss and learn from each other and if on the way we solve some particular problem then that is an extra benefit. My point in you being able to repeat your results and looking for a pattern to emerge was in reference just to your comment about your profile on that one test machine, not every machine or user.

I did see this comment while chasing a possible answer, "•Locked files won't be deleted by Outlook upon close and will accumulate in the OLK folder creating a treasure trove of semi-secret documents hidden on your local hard drive".

Snippets and Snails

Linney, thanks! good to see we are all just trying to solve problems.
I did try changing the path of where the files are saved.
I was able to change the registry entry to the temp IE folder, and I receive the read only error. Wuho!
However my boss is looking for an answer why these files are locked(thanks! This is a word I was not searching with).

After lunch I will be back online searching again. I have a feeling "this is what it is", and I will not find the MS answer my boss is seeking.

Thank you for the post, I will let you know if I find any more information.
