All,

One of our servers (A Win2k, Oracle server) included in the backup causes the backup to fail each night with the error message "Failed to receive data from client agent" in the ARCServe backup log. After checking the backup ARCServe can connect to ALL servers through the agents, backs up ALL drives but still reports as failed. I am unable to find enough details in any of the logs to narrow things down, but I have pasted the ARCServe logs excerpts both from the backup server and the client agent for you to have a look at. Any help in narrowing down why this backup fails would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
Oh yes, our backup config is, win2k,ARCServe2000/SP4.

This is probably the cause of the Failed status:
E8522 Failed to receive data from the client agent. (EC=10060)
The error code 10060 is a winsock error and just lets you know there was a connection problem over the network but no idea as to why.

Take a look at what should have been backed up and what was backed up and you will see that it is way short of what it should be. The backup may be hitting every volume but it missed a lot of data.

So you need to track down the source of the lost connection, because it could be on the network or at the target system.
Here are some suggestions.
1) There is a registry setting to increase the timeout period (sorry but I forget the details on it and if it is at the server &/or client side).
2) In the client admin under configuration set the backup priority to low (yes low, high usually makes it worse).
3) Since you are in the services group get a network specialist there with a sniffer.
4) Simple method is to swap network cables with another system (in case it is a problem with the port or cable).

Thanks so much for your suggestions. i will have a look at the timeout settings, and if that does not help, will change the backup priority.

And apply the lates Service pack to the NT Client agent..

Cheers
Speshalyst

So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

Just to let you know I set the Send and Receive timeout settings to 0 (which means Never) in the registry. This fixed the problem.

I am a new user of ARCServe, can you tell me how to set the Send and Receive timeout?

Use regedt32.exe,
depending on the version it will be found either under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ BrightStor ARCserve Backup \ ClientAgent \ Parameters

or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ ARCservIT \ ClientAgent \ Parameters

double click on value.

My system is WIn2k + ArcServe 2000. I searched the register table, but only found 2 items that have relationship with Timeout:
1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ BrightStor ARCserve Backup \ SmartReaction \ Patameters \ EventTimeout, whose value is 0x64;
2.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ BrightStor ARCserve Backup \ Base \ Task \ Common \ DBAgentSettings \ TCPTimeout, whose value is ox4b0.

How should I do?

My system is Win2k + ArcServe 9. I searched the register table, but only found 2 items that have relationship with Timeout:

2.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ ComputerAssociates \ BrightStor ARCserve Backup \ Base \ Task \ Common \ DBAgentSettings \ TCPTimeout, whose value is ox4b0.

You said it. I have not installed Client Agent. After I installed, I found it and set those parameters to 0.

Thank you so much.
