Not Using TSU on PRI T1

We are going to be putting a DS3 between two locations, our current one here in Portland and a new location going in in Omaha. We are planning on setting the DS3 to look like PRI T1's so we can route call information between our G3r and G3si. We'll use a Adtran MX2800 mux to break out the T1's on each end.

My question has to do with TSU's. I've read that a TSU is really needed for the carrier's benifit for doing loopbacks and other tests and it's not needed for the circuits themselves. I've also read that they seem to work for some but not for others.

Since we plan on having about 18 T1's set up, not having to buy 18 TSU's would save a good bit of money, if it does work. My question has to do with the connector that goes on the back of the PBX and connects the cable to the TN464F card. Can I use a 259A plug (and I assume I'll need a T1 crossover plug since it will be a straight through T1 cable) to connect the cable? If I don't use a TSU, do I set the DS1 board as Other or Integrated?

Hopefully it will work.

Thanks

Mike

don't set it to integrated unless you are using a 120 integrated csu

I would ask why, at this point, you wouldn't just use H.323 or SIP trunks, and make the circuit all data w/QoS... You wouldn't need TN464 cards at both ends, you might end up haveing to buy some CLANs and MEDPRO/Media Processor cards, but that's a better investment at this point in time.

Mitch, sorry for the delay in answering your question, I've been busy getting the system and network equipment configured and off to our new facility. The PBX is there but there were problems between COX and Global Crossing arguing over what standard to use, which has delayed getting our DS3 installed. So until that gets done, I've got a breather for a week.

The reason is we are not set up for SIP and we want to go with what we already have and know works with our call center application. Our calls are just too important to our business to start switching things right now. We are going to be putting in a SIP network to another facility later this year, but we won't be under a time constraint with that one like we are now... so it will give me and the others involved a chance to work the kinks out of it and intergrate it into our existing system. After we see how that works, we might be more confident in it.

If I remember right, the Adtran 2800 Mux connects to a shelf of "Smart" CSU's. I don't think you can connect directly between the Mux and the PBX . . . . But I may be mistaken.....
