I recently built a computer and it worked fine for about 4 days. Now when i start my computer up it goes through the Hardware check-up, says everythings ok, then when it is supposed to start loading windows, it goes blank.

-some helpful info
It won't load windows with the CD in the drive.
I downloaded a program to switch the login screens where you can see user profiles

If any of you could shed a little light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

-Thank you

Will it boot into Safe Mode (F8)?

If it does you can try using System Restore to get back to before you experienced any troubles.

i installed xp service pack 2 but i dont think it was connected to the internet at the time.

I downloaded a program to switch the login screens where you can see user profiles

What program would that be?

Sounds like your boot.ini is corrupted or ntldr isnt finding explorer.exe.

logon loader is the program

No, it goes to the bios screen then goes right away to a blank, black screen from which i can't do anything from that screen.

Hi,
Can you, during the POST, press F12 ( or some other Fkey) repeatedly to get to the bios setup menu and set the CD drive to be the first in the boot sequence?
Then insert you Windows CD and boot from there..

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

you need to change your boot order as Turk said, and set your Boot Sequence to CDDrive > Hard Disk > Floppy

Hope this Helps.

ive tried that many of times and still nothing..

Are you sure the boot order is correct in the bios?

With the WinXP cd inserted, if the cd-rom is the first device in boot order it will prompt you with "Press any key to boot from cd".

it still doesnt boot the disk after pressing any key

Is the Bios seeing your hard drive?

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is bootable from floppy (or CD) that will thoroughly check your hard drive.

i dont have a floppy drive :(

Hi BH13 and everyone,

It may be frowned upon by many to be so quick to open the case and work with the hardware, but I don't think this way. I suggest hooking up a different hard drive, to at least see if the computer is capable of booting farther than the current fall-down point.
