I'm not sure if this is the right place but it's as close as i can get.

What do you call something that you give or send to someone - seemingly for no apparent reason - but really it's a sweetener so you can get something back from them sometime in the future?

I.e. they will be obliged to give you something because you gave them something before.

BTW, I am not good with mustard, wasabi would be a better choice :)

It sounds like a bribe to me. One might also consider this an inducement, as well as incentive, allurement, or perhaps bait.

Is the expectation of future return known on both sides of the deal?
e.g. My mom treats me best because she realizes that I am the most likely choice to care for her in her declining years. Not good to be a harpy at this stage given the likely outcome.

Or

I sell a one-time service related to weddings. I do this with the utmost care, devoting extra time for those of child bearing age in hopes that I may be called upon for more business when they have children.

Are these outside the scope of what you're asking about?

but more accurately:

"investment: the outlay of value with the expectation of future increase or return from that value."

According to the question asked, the little WWF panda sticker that the World Wildlife Fund used to send out qualifies...

Is that manipulation? I guess so in the denotative sense. Unsure in the "con"-otative sense

I think SantaMufasa is closest with [blue]investment[/blue], but it seems somehow to need a modifier.

How about [blue]wildcat investment[/blue]? You aren't sure what the payoff will be.

Actually, faxof, why don't you want to use the term, bribe? We can certainly do Thesaurus activities here, but it seems to me that the best definition for what occurred is truly a

Tim,

I'm sorry, but you are in clear violation of the ATLAL (Anti Three Letter Acronym Legislation) of 2004, which clearly states that:
ATLAL said:
No new Three Letter Acronyms (TLAs) shall be introduced into the wild until the following conditions have been met:

[ul][li]The TLA must be subjected to a wide range of Acronym Validity Tests (AVTs). The scope of these tests shall be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Acronym Testing Administration (ATA).[/li]
[li]The TLA must then be approved by the Federal Drug Administration's (FDA's) new Acronym Inspection Unit (AIU).[/li]
[li]After Both of the Above Conditions (BAC's) have been met, the TLA must then be approved by a Two Thirds Majority (TTM) in both the House And Senate (HAS).[/li]
[li]At this point the TLA will be delivered via UPS (not via DHL [unless they publish what those letters stand for], and never via Fed-Ex) to the President’s White Residence (PWR) (formerly known as the 'White House'). The President of the United States (POTUS) must then place his Presidential Seal of Approval (PSA) on the TLA.[/li][/ul]
Consider this a Public Warning and Notification (PWN) that 'JAT' is an Unsanctioned Three Letter Acronym (UTLA).

I see a bit of a difference between a bribe and what faxof is looking for.

A bribe has a relatively specific intended outcome.

e.g. "I'll give you X and hope that you can find it in your heart to do Y")

Faxof is looking for something with an indeterminate outcome.

e.g. "I'll give you X. Perhaps you can repay me some day."

I'd call that a "favor."

Think about someone who says, "I'm calling in a favor. I need Y." If they need to further persuade the person, they can say, "Remember two years ago when I gave you X? Now's your chance to repay me."

I might also call it "leverage.

Chipper,

Maybe the bribes you give/get are for a specific ROI (See John's ATLAL discussion, above), but I'll stand by Merriam-Webster from whose definition I infer nothing about a specificity component. I still believe that "bribe" is foxof's best word.
