Norton Causing Unusual Hard Drive Activity (every 5 minutes)

Hi,

I originally had this down as a problem with my new 120GB Maxtor hard drive. However, I've tried the drive in two separate machines and it works fine.

The problem I'm experiencing is that every 5 minutes, almost to the second, I'm experiencing a 2-5 second hard drive sound like a "soft click-purr-purr-soft click". Like I said, I've had the drive in two machines, and systems engineers in my office have assured me that the drive itself is making no unusual noises. I've ran the manufacturer's tests on the disk and these have all came back saying it's fine.

However, in the machine in my office, I couldn't replicate the same, systematic, regular intervall click-purr sound.

I've been led to believe that this could be caused by the fact I have Norton AntiVirus installed on my home machine. Possibly the real time monitoring, checking the disk every 5 minutes. Or something similar to that.

Has anyone ever heard anything like this? Is it normal?

Any advice, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ADDITION

I forgot to mention, that the disk is practically emtpy. When I was getting the sound, there were only a couple of empty folders on the drive.
