In the hope of helping others, I want to post how I finally got Norton Systems Works 2002 to install and work. This took about 30 hours of trial and error, research, and brain picking. And as usual, the solution was simple.
Background - Runing WIndows 98 and had NSW 2000 installed. This is my home system, so there are no corporate firewalls.
I also had IE4 installed (mainly use N/S).
NSW requires IE5 or higher.
I uninstalled NSW 2000, or at least tried to, it was really flakey.
Installed IE6 from the MS site.
Installed NSW 2002.
The buttons on the Info. wizard did not fuction, and the antivirus status showed "refreshing" on all menu items.
I did the following in varius combinations and sequences:
Uninstalled 2002, installed and uninstalled 2000, ran Symantec's system clean and antivirus removal utilities, followed Symantec's instructions for a manual uninstall, deleted every reference to Symantec and Norton from the registry. None of this helped.
I turned my attention to IE6, since the install, despite having the latest versions of MS VM, and Java Runtime, and all the correct settings, there were a couple of web sites that nolonger worked correctly ( displayed a blank screen), "About IE6" did not display the version Number and was missing other info, and the buttons on the "About" window did not function.
I came up with the theory that since NSW required at least IE5, there must be something wrong with it, also the flakey first attempt and uninstalling NSW 2000 probably left the antivirus running during the IE6 download/install.
I decided to do a reinstall of IE6. I obtained a copy on CD. I went into Add/Remove programs to uninstall the bad version, and saw an option to "Repair IE6". I took this option, and the IE6 problems went away. I reinstalled NSW 2002, and went to the antivirus screen. The Status showed "refreshing", but only long enough for me to spout a couple of choice words. Suddenly the word "ON" and dates poped up everywhere! The problem was solved. The only thing that doesn't work is the "email protection". Research on that showed that it could be a conflict type thing with my ISP, it often causes problems, and it is only an "extra layer" of protection. Attacthments are still scanned. I can live without it.
One more point, the Windows update site screen was not coming up blank, but that was solved by downloading and installing the Windows Scripting program from M/S.
Well, I hope this is of some help to somebody, you won't find it in the Symantec knowledge base.
