I am having trouble connecting the PC Serial to Nortel Switch Serial Comm Port to be used with Hyprer Terminal to access this Unit to be configured. I never used it and would like to know how it's done step by step. I used a cross over cable with both ends using a serial. What configuration do you use to access the switch? Hyper Term. 9600 bits per sec, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Flow COntrol None. Would this work? I am using Xp Pro with Latest Hyperterminal release.

Nortel was on-site to look into why I can't communicate with the BCM. After consulting with their GNTS center they concluded that either the hard drive was corrupt or the MSC card was bad. (Remember 6 of the green LED's were constantly flashing)Parts are now on order.
Okay, now to your issue.
Are any of the green lights flashing? Nortel said none should be. If so, look up the error message in the manual.Your problem could be this simple.

Have you tried to connect via IE browser?
There are 2 lan ports and unless you changed the IP address for both, one should still be set at default (10.10.10.1 or 10.10.10.2 submask 255.255.255.0
Use a cross over cable from you laptop to the LAN port.
Be sure to go to network places & change the PC IP address, & sub mask first. When you open IE explorer it will fail. Then key in the destination address (.1 or .2). use http:// and https:// commands, one should work.
We both had communication problems but at least your system is working, you just can't make changes for now. I had a much more sever problem.

If you system is relaese 2.5 try this IP address as well in your laptop.
10.10.20.2
155.255.255.0
10.10.20.2

An interesting note:
After opening up the box, LAN1 & Lan2 ports as etched into the motherboard do not match the external LAN1 & Lan2 labeling on the front of the box. ?????

inet2xtreme, thanks for your input, yes I tried 4 laptops, and a desktop. Nothing, and I have currently checked all ports, etc.......still nothing. I am currently on vacation this week till the 18th of July, which I will return to work.

Phonedude77, wow man, thanks for the info. I do need to make some changes like IP, Console Password, etc......There were no lights lighting up at all, just during boot time which is normal for Nortel or any other type of switches or routers. I will be printing off the info you wrote down and take them to work on July 18th and do the research. I hope to keep fingers crossed, but again, it's from another company. It came from them, and they must have changed the IP which I am pretty sure they don't reset defaults settings on all switches or routers. I just normally, like in CISCO switch or Routers, I just bypass it and do a recovery, then go from there, boom, all done. Easy. Nortel is making this a very complicated issues, but always willing to learn new things. The guys on this site and forums are great, making every possible effort and the time to help each other out.

Sweet!
Thanks
Will give that a try on July 18th 2005.

I dont know if this will solve your problem, but i had a problem like this, i have a 450 that i was trying to console into and it would not work at all. It ended up being the fiber module needed to be reseated, i dont know if it was shorting something or if it was locking the software up or what, but this solved the problem when we reseated the fiber module. Hope this helps.

Have you junked that nortel yet or have you actually got it working? A friend of mine recently got a 450 from e-bay and we were hoping to set it up for vlans, but we came across the same problem. Seems like a common difficulty. Let me know your final solution. Thanks man I would definetly apreciate it.

Omi256, dude, I figured it out, and I have not been on here for some time because I got it working. I used a DB9 (9pins) straight cable for both ends. I set up my Hyper Termial as we do in CISCO, but making sure that your Hyper Terminal is set up using VT100, not Auto....it's probably the reason why there's no input action being made to the Console. I know this frustration because I was there, took me a long ass time to figure it out. At first I didnt' know what VT100 was, so, it's just another way of communicating to the Console ports, weird that it works for the CISCO but not the Nortel. So, make sure the AUTO is off, and use VT100, knowling that your using, 9600, 8, N, 1 settings. Let me know if you get it working.

Peace and Happy Holidays....

Thanks man!! And thank you everyone! I was able to log in and it works like a charm!

Thanks ! I had the same problem and it works now...

Not a problem!!!! I know many other people know how to do it, but they just didn't come across in a more simple form of understanding...so now I work with Nortel/CISCO all the time....so, glad that I was of help...we all continue to work together to make anything happen or anyone that needs anything...this site is awesome!!!

Hi there. I'm also having problems with accessing Nortel BayStack's. I've bought a Nortel BayStack 350-24T with fiber module (450-1SX MDA) through eBay. Quickly after receiving that switch I realised that the console port was not working. I also discovered that eBay description said "The console port does not work".

Well. So I thought: This 350-24T is not going to work, but I DO have fiber module I can plug into another BayStack.

So I bought a BayStack 450-24T on eBay for not much money. I received that switch today, plugged in the fiber card and connected it to my pc. BUT this was also not working. So I tried changing some settings (flow-control, VT100, plugging in/out the fiber module), but nothing seems to help.

Could someone help me out? Thanks in advance!

OK well, AK1337

The only thing could be possibly messed up and keeping you from accessing the CONSOLE in the 450-24T unit, it could be that the the SOCKET in the Console PORT might be bad...also you should check your STR8-Thru Cable to make sure it's pushed in all the way in..try opening and closing HyperTerm, check to make sure that the Flow-Control is set to NONE. The VT100 is the important factor on the Nortel. We have those units here at work, we do testing, it's a possibility that the Console POrt is bad...If it was us, we would DEFECT it. Can you at least access the Nortel without the FIBER MOD? If you can ACCESS the Console Port without the FIBER MOD, then we know it's not the CONSOLE PORT, this is just a part of trouble shooting here. If you still can't get in the CONSOLE without the MOD "FIBER MOD" then you will know that the Console is BAD, hence, DEFECTIVE.

I hope this helps, if not, then I am sorry about that.

I would bring that unit back to the person you bought it off from EBAY.....

The point is: I've tried a 350-24T AND a 450-24T but both are not working. I think it is unlikely that the console ports on BOTH switches are broke.

Anyway, thanks for your tips, I'm going to try them out!

Hmm. That did not seem to work. I've tried it out on the 350-24T and the 450-24T but it does not seem to work. I can't get output from both the switches...

bikerboyzrc, what kind of terminal program are you using and what EXACT settings are using?

I think I have the proper cable here. I think its a DB9 cable with on both ends a female connector. This cable does his job on 3Com SuperStack's and Nortel Accelar 1200's. VERY strange it won't work with the BayStack's.

Anyone who has an idea? I don't think BOTH of my BayStacks are defective... I think it can have to do something with my fiber module. But then again, plugging that module in or out doesn't give ANY difference. Is it possible the module has damaged something in de software?

Thanks for your input in advance!

Remember, the 3Com/HP and that Nortel Accelerator uses NULL Modem Cable. The Nortel Baystack uses Straight Thru Cable on a DB9 Female ENDS. That's a big difference.

You could be using the wrong cable.

Check that out....

Hmm. So I'm using a NULL modem cable... didn't knew that  (well it doesn't say anything on the cable...).

Anyway, I have a CISCO RJ45 to DB9 cable aswell, could that work somehow? Or else I'm going to have to get a DB9 female to DB9 female cable somewhere :).

Dude, the CISCO CABLE w/RJ5 at one END, DB9 at the other END is called a ROLL OVER CABLE, it's BLUE. Some come in BLACK too....

They are only DESIGNED FOR CISCO ONLY.....

You need a Straight Thru Cable both ends DB9 Female and yes they don't have a LABEL ON IT....It's weird I know, I went through with that myself....

Got the cable and it works! Thanks a lot for your support!

SWEET!!!! Need any other help just let me know...I like troubleshooting...it just makes my cranium PUMP!! LOL!!
