I am having trouble connecting the PC Serial to Nortel Switch Serial Comm Port to be used with Hyprer Terminal to access this Unit to be configured. I never used it and would like to know how it's done step by step. I used a cross over cable with both ends using a serial. What configuration do you use to access the switch? Hyper Term. 9600 bits per sec, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Flow COntrol None. Would this work? I am using Xp Pro with Latest Hyperterminal release.

That doesn't work man. I used both ends to be DB9 and a straight through, DOESN"T WORK. I tried that, and Pressed Control Y. NOTHING. Sorry man, I tried everything. Do you have to use a special DB9 ends? Or just a regular one?

Thanks

Nope, just DB-9 female connectors on both ends.

If you can use your PC to talk to other serial devices via it's com port, then maybe the 450 switch has a problem (or someone changed the port settings/parity/baud rate etc on the port). But I'd expect you'd get garbage on your console if that were the case.

Only other thing I could suggest would be connect your PC to the switch and then power cycle the switch to see if anything gets displayed (such as POST messages, etc).

Ok so both ends Female which I understand, and use a straight Through Cat5 Cable right?

Thanks for the help, I am more of a CISCO Guy then a Nortel Guy. I never used it, but we are doing special testing on Them and I can't get in there. I need to get specs like RAM/FLASH/IOS or something in there.

I also found this site,

THis looks to be the one your telling me, both ends Female and a straight through don't see that in there.

It's right there....

If the switch you wish to configure has already been assigned an IP address, the switch configuration settings may alternatively be accessed using a telnet client.

If you are configuring the switch settings for the first time (i.e., out of the box) you will need a serial cable and a PC running HyperTerminal in order to access the switch settings.

****The serial cable must have straight-through connections but with female DB9 connections on both ends.***

Nortel recommends part number RS26-152 from Radio Shack. Follow the steps listed below.

Well the switch was from another vendor, a company I mean. So, I dont know the password nor the Login info. I dont' know the IP address at all either. So, my only hope is connect using a HyperTerm settings of 9600, 8, None, 1, None, just like CISCO, but using Straight Through, both ends as DB9. I will look into that part number.

Thanks man for the help.

When you said Follow the Steps Listed BELOW, there is nothing below, or do you mean above? Haha

ok Dude, I got it to work!!!!!
But it says to Enter Ctrl-Y nothing is happening. What's up with that?

THanks man

Both ends DB 9 Female, Straight Cable Cat5e works like a charm.

The CISCo cable is a rollover cable, not a straight through. That is why your CISCO console cable doesn't work.

After you Press Cntrl-Y, you will get a config menu.

No, I am using a straight through cable, with both ends DB9 when I got the prompt to press CTRL-Y then nothing happen.I know the CISCO is rollover, but I was told to use Straight Through which is what I used.

Again, I used both ends DB9, then a Straight Through Cat5e Cable, then it worked, but no reponse from the switch on Nortel.

So, let me know what should I use a RollOver or Straight Through?

Thanks for your info

Try to adjust your send and/or receive buffers on your computer. I had a similar problem with the correct cable a couple of weeks ago. Our IS guy suggested that I go to device manager, port settings, advanced and move the slidders all the way up or down. I moved the first one (receive) all they way down, and it worked like a champ. My original issues was that I could watch the device boot-up, but could not input any characters. After the buffer adjustment, I could then login.

Thanks man, never thought of that one. i will give that a try tomorrow at work. I got a ton of Nortel's man!!! Haha!! I am just a CISCO GUY! But I like learning new things just makes me more flexible.

Thanks again!!!
Will let ya know if it worked.

Please forgive the following questions and info as I do not know your skill set or experience. I'm just going from the basics that I have learned.

You mention that you are using a Straight through CAT5e cable.

Are you using an adapter to go from RJ45 to DB9 female to make the CAT5e cable into a DB9 to DB9 SERIAL cable?

Did you make these adaptors?

Have you made sure that both adaptors are made/pinout the same?

If you do have the adaptors, do you have either a OHM meter/continuity meter or a Cabling toner with continuity checking? You can check your pinout with a continuity meter/tester. Make sure that both DB9 ends have continuity to the exact same pin on the other side and that there is no continuity to a second pin on the other side.

If you don't have the RJ45 adaptors already, then I would suggest that you either get a Straight Through SERIAL cable with DB9 female ends OR get new RJ45 to DB9 Female adaptors and make them both the same and then use the new adaptors with your CAT5e straight through cable.

If you have never made the RJ45 to DB9 adaptors before, they come in a kit. The adaptor has 8 conductors, each a different color, already connected to the RJ45 end. At the end of each conductor, there is pin that will fit into holes in the DB9 end that comes with the adaptor kit. This allows the maker to customize the pinout of the DB9 end. This is where you will need to make each adaptor the same. It does not matter which color conductor goes where on the DB9 ends, just that each adaptor is the same. Be careful not to make a mirror image (I did that once). You may be wondering which pin to not connect on the DB9 ends as each one will have 9 pins and there is only 8 conductors in a CAT5e cable. I am pretty sure that you would not use pin 9.

I would highly recommend getting a pre-made DB9 to DB9 SERIAL CABLE instead of making adaptors for your CAT5e cable.

You should be able to get either the DB9 to DB9 SERIAL Straight Through cable or the RJ45 to DB9 adaptors at any good computer hardware supply shop. Not sure of the part numbers.

Hope that helps.

Sorry Dude, the first time I looked through this thread tonight, I didn't see that you had it pretty much working. I would still check the pinout and make sure that both ends are the same and that each pin only connects to one pin on the other side.

The buffers should help as well.

Wow man, thanks for the info.

I used a premade DB9 set with a RJ45 built in, using a Straight Through Cable Cat5e, again both ends are using a premade DB9. I have changed the buffer on the Port Settings on the Receive to the lesser Value. Then I changed it to the middle, still get no response from the Switch. All it says Enter Ctrl-Y to begin....I do that, then nothing happens. I tried a few things but still nothing. Hey, I am happy I got through step one, but it's not communicating with the Switch with a Serial DB9 Adapter, which is premade like you said NO PART NUMBER needed. The only issue is the Keying In. No Response from the Switch while Pressing Ctrl-Y. Nothing. Using HT settings 9600, 8, N, 1. There is nothing wrong with the Switch but just can't get it to function or communicate with my Key Input to access the Switch's Console.

Mitely Guy, thanks for your help. The buffers didnt' work. I put it all the way to the left, then center, on the Recieve, and tried the send too as well. Nothing.

Tnanks for everyone's Help on this topic!!!!!!!
Any more info would be greatly appreciated it.

I'm still working out my issue trying to connect to the BCM, but I came across some info.

Are most of the green lights on the front constantly flashing?
If so, this could be due to a MSC card failure. This is a known problem in the 200 & 400 platform and can happen usually up to 16 weeks of install.

This of course may not be your problem, but I'm determined to know why I can't communicate with the box either.

Nortel may assist me in the next few days. I'll post the solution as soon as I learn what it is.

phonedude77, thank for the inquiry of the information you've gathered, and the switches are working like a charm, but I can't access it or communicate with it by console with DB9 to DB9 straight through cabling. My only objective at this point is really to communicate with the switch, asked me to press ctrl-y, I get no response from it.

When you get the solution, it would certainly help, just dont' know what the deal is. It's just not letting me do a thing. Everyone been great in providing me information on the switch which is great, team work!! Thanks you all!!

Rick

After pressing ctrl-y, then press ctrl-c that should give you your console menu.

Nope, I tried that today man, nothing. The Ctrl-Y and press Ctrl-C, nothing. No reactions to the Console Menu.

Thanks for trying man.

Hope someone can give me another hint on how to get this to work.

Are you emulating a VT-100 ?

I am using the latest version of SP2, with built in Terminal Server for Telnet. It does have a built in VT-100, if i stand correct?

Thanks

Have you tried another computer? Usually, when I have issues like this, I grab a laptop from one of the techs and find that it works a lot better than mine.
