I am having trouble connecting the PC Serial to Nortel Switch Serial Comm Port to be used with Hyprer Terminal to access this Unit to be configured. I never used it and would like to know how it's done step by step. I used a cross over cable with both ends using a serial. What configuration do you use to access the switch? Hyper Term. 9600 bits per sec, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Flow COntrol None. Would this work? I am using Xp Pro with Latest Hyperterminal release.

I got no CD's at all. What I am trying to do is connect to the Nortel Switch to the Console, then I want to get rid of the password. It's been a crazy week doing research but not sure what to use to connect to the Comm Port. Thanks for answering this questions.

I'm pretty sure that you have to use a straight through serial cable, DB9 female for the 460 and DB9 female for your com port on the PC. Once you connect at 9800 n-8-1, press enter. I believe that you will then get a sceen that tells you to press Ctrl-Y. Then you will be prompted for a password if the switch was configured to require a password. Not sure of the default. The default is that a password is not required. Hope that helps.

Also, if you use a program like Procom Plus, you will not get a confirmation or indication of being connected. Just press enter or ctrl-Y to see if you have connectivity.

Thanks for trying man, it doesn't work. I used a straight through cable and a cross over, nothing, with Hyperterm config set for 9600, 8, None, 1, None, then enter, no activity going on at all. I used Com1 serial connector which I know the com number, also used on the CISCO. This is weird. I am new to using Nortel so, any other help is appreciated it.
Thanks for trying!! I give ya credit on that.

Even though this is the BCM forum, maybe this will help you out.

Straight through serial cable. 9600-8-N-1, flow control off. Press Control-Y, and you should see the login menu.

If you don't know the password, there isn't anyway to recover the password except to stack the unit with another 450/BPS/460, etc with a known password, then do a factory reset on the stack. The unit you are stacking it with should have the same software rev as the system you are trying to recover the password from. You might be able factory reset the switch through Device Manager using SNMP, provided you know the SNMP strings and IP address. IP address might be hard to get without a serial cable, but it is doable with sniffer utilites, etc.

I have tried to get rid of this thread off this part of the BCM but it wont' let me. I have it on another part, in the correct area. I know a way to bypass the password, but I can't get in the CONSOLE. It's totally weird. I use a straight through cable, but using the same settings for the hyper terminal on a CISCO Router or Switch, nothing happens. Not even a login, nothing, so that means it's a physical connection to the switch. I used a straight cable with both ends using a DB9's, then used a cross over, still nothing. Odd. I am at a lost.

Are you able to try the connection on another Baystack? Perhaps the problem is with the comm port on the Baystack.

Another thought may be that no one logged out of the last session while on the comm port. Try pressing CRTL-L a couple of times. Crtl-L is the shortcut for log out. Or try Crtl-R.

Just a thought.

I will definitely give that a try. I will let ya know how it went. As soon as I get to work, then will fire it up, and try another Baystack Switch. Thanks man, and the other guys that's been trying to help.

I have found a way to may a NULL MODEM CABLE, you can Take the DB9 Female end with a Stright Through Cable, and Add a CrossOver Adapter to it, finally put another DB9 Adapter female end, there you have a NULL Modem Cable, however, I still can't get in the CONSOLE!! Even after using, 9600,8,N,1 nothing. I read on the internet that you can make your own NULL MODEM CABLE EASY but still doesn't work. I used a working Baystack, still can't get in. Apologies for putting this in the wrong forum. I am new to this. Thanks for trying, I dont know what else to do. I am still going to try to get a NULL MODEM CABLE with Female DB8 ends.

Use Hyperterm PRIVATE Edition!! Much easier then installed version. Flow contepl X-on/X-off enabled.

Tried it, nothing I just think it has to do with the NULL MODEM CABLE. I am going to run at a local Radio Shack to grab one, then go from there. It's not doing anything man. I use it on the CISCO like nothing, but NORTEL is one pain in the ass!!!!! I thank those of you that's been giving me great many idea man!! Thanks!!!!

For me it's t'other way. Cisco is a pain in the ***.

that's ok man, the whole point is, everyone has there own skills and knowledge and I like CISCO, and you like Nortel, meaning that we could be a team player in the Networking field dealing with different vendor and stuff. It's cool man!! we tried, and well, bumped into a few walls. It happens.

Just looked in my course notes for the Baystack. This is a quote from the book....

"The console port is a DB-9, RS232-D male serial port connecteor wired as data communications equipment (DCE). You can use this connector to connect a management station or console/terminal to the Baystack Switch by using a straight-through DB-9 to DB-9 standard serial port cable. You must use a VT100/ANSI-compatible terminal. The console port allows you to access the CI screens."

So, use a straight through cable, VT-100, 9800, N-8-1, flow control off, ASCII.

I think that you can also Telnet to the console if you know the management IP subnet of the switch.

Good Luck.

Sweet going man!! You've outdone yourself, let's have a beer!!!!! Haha!! I will give that a try and I did see the VT-100 some where, and I guess I must have ignored that part.

I will certainly give that a try, and see how that goes.

Thanks a lot man!!!!!!

I've been following bikerboyzrc's issue.

Was wondering if you resolved your issue connecting to the BCM? I have the exact same problem and have been following the suggestions but I still can't connect.
Did you ever find a config that worked?

Thanks

Hey phonedude77 I just thought I let ya know I just ordered a NULL MODEM CABLE w/ both ends being DB9, so not yet. I have tried every damn thing, nothing. I am waiting for it, so it's going to take some time. I will definitly let ya know when I figure it out, or get it to work. Right at the moment I am clueless.

Thanks man

Nortel data switches don't use null modem cables - they use straight through cables.

Use a straight through cable, 9600, 8, N, 1 no flow control, connect. Press Control-Y and you should see the Baystack login screen.
