I have 3 Norstar VOIP Gateways, 1 BCM, and 1 Option 11C. I would like to use the G.729 codec. Calls from the BCM to M1 and from BCM to VOIP Gateway complete fine in both directions. Calls from VOIP Gateway to M1 sound very quiet and garbled. If I switch over to G.711 or G.723, it sounds fine.

In addition, I can't complete any calls if I have 2 IP Trunk cards enabled. I get a fast busy for everything coming from the VOIP Gateway. However, calls are fine that come from the BCM. The only way it works with the VOIP Gateway is when I have the 2nd IP Trunk card disabled. This customer would like to be able to use both of the cards he purchased. I am pointing to the VOIP gateway as the problem, especially on the codec issue.

Any thoughts out there? Nortel is also stumped and said they are going to design and will get back to me.

Undocumented fact on Norstar IP Gateway.
You require an E&M card for DTMF receivers for proper operation.
Services card includes 5 DTMF receivers but doesn't seem to work as per documentation.

Not sure if this will help.

From the book MICS installer guide:
For Loop Start or CI Trunk Cartridges installed in a Trunk
Module, you will also need one E&M/DISA Trunk
Cartridge for every two loop start trunks that you configure
as auto-answer. The E&M/DISA Trunk Cartridge provides
two DTMF receivers to receive the incoming digits from
the central office. An auto-answer loop start trunk can give
you the same kind of direct inward dialing function as a
DID trunk.

we are having similar problems with our voip gateway to ITG link using G.729. 1st call is broken up. Second call is okay. When we look in channel status of the gateway I see that the ITG is sending recieve silence.
Does turning off VAD on the Option 11 and turning off silence supression on the gateway make the problem better or worse?
On another note have you ever lost the web password for the gateway? have you tried to recover it? Instructions in the manual require access to the web interface (which needs the password)to reset the password. I am confused about that.

I have tried with VAD and Silence Suppression off and I get the same problem. I never have tried to make a second call at the same time, but that is interesting. As far as the password goes, I believe you should be able to console in to the back of the unit with a serial connection and reset or change the password there. Otherwise, you will have to blow away the config and start over.

Nortel is saying that it is an incompatibility issue where the ITG side only uses g.729 annex A and the VOIP gateway is using straight g.729. The BCM also uses straight g.729, but I don'e have this problem with that site.

I still haven't figured out why I can't have both ITG cards enabled, but I will be trying to setup 2 separate nodes with 2 d-channels to see if this helps.

Surprisingly, everything has been going fine with all 5 sites using g.723. I have always been taught not to use that codec, but in this case, everything sounds great and I am using as little bandwidth as possible.

I will keep you posted on whether or not the 2 node setup helps with the fast busy when using 2 ITG cards.
