Norstar USA 4.0 XC rel 01 w/ PRI to USA 7.0 XC upgrade 2

After reading numerous threads here I'm of course finding a couple of different suggestions on how to proceed with this. Basically:

1) Backup, power down. Swap NVRAM cart, re-insert 4.0 SW, power up, restore. Power down, insert upgrade tool, then insert 6.1 Cartridge. Backup. Power down. Insert 7.0 XC cartridge, power up.

other option:

2) Backup, power down. Upgrade tool, then 6.1 XC; power up. If all goes well, backup again. Power down, Replace NVRAM to rel 02. Power up, then restore from previous 6.1 backup.

(or something like that)

Trying to determine the "proper" path, as well as any insight into what actually works best, because as we all know sometimes Nortel's way isn't always the best way. :)

Interesting note- I'm being told by my supplier that I will be unable to restore the programming from my rel 01 NVRAM backup into the rel 02; that it will error.

Can anyone confirm? If this is the case, then the 7.0 upgrade tool is useless for customers with the rel 01 NVRAM, is it not? Why purchase the tool if you can't retain any of the programming?
 
If you're already at 4.0 you shouldn't need the upgrade tool to go to 6.1, then 7.0. I've had no issues going from the R1 cartridge to R2. This is how I would do it:

1 - Power off, swap R1 cartridge for R2, power on, backup.
2 - Power off, insert 6.1, power on, backup.
3 - Power off, insert 7.0, power on, backup.

If you're adding any new hardware such as a second 6-port expansion, do this last.

Note: Programming is stored on the MICS motherboard.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, I'd like to ask if you're certain that the programming is stored internally on the MICS? I'd swear that I've pulled the SW out of the KSU previously and have lost all programming-

If I'm mistaken, that makes the entire thing much easier.

MICS rel 4.1 - NVRAM rel 01 upgraded (just the h/w) to NVRAM rel 02 ---- Power off-> pull NVRAM -> pull s/w card -> insert existing s/w card into new NVRAM rel 02 -> re-insert NVRAM re 02 into MICS CORE -> POWER UP within 5 minutes retored with all programming, nothing lost... SYS ID DID NOT CHANGE BUT NOTE! NO KEYCODES WERE REQUIRED TO BE SAVED DURING THIS RECENT CHANGE e.g. a PRI Enabler, so this method cannot confirm that keycodes would not be lost but since the SYS ID didnt change you can assume that the KEYCODES WOULD NOT BE LOST... PLEASE RECORD YOUR KEYCODES BEFORE you make any changes
 
If you get the upgrade tool, and follow the instructions, you won't lose any of the pgm info even when replacing the NVRAM Cart Rls 1 to Rls 2. I've done several MICS upgrades without any problems. I took s/w 1.1 w/ NVRAM Cart Rls 1 to s/w 4.1 w/ NVRAM Cart Rls 2 then 7.0. Again I followed the Nortel instructions exactly. The good thing w/ the upgrade tool, is you can use it more than once.

Anytime you downgrade hardware (expansion cards) or software your system will default. I test all the used equipment we buy so I know that inserting a different software cartridge into my MICS test cabinet does not default my database as long as the software is at the same or higher level. The upgrade path in my previous post has worked for me. Your mileage may vary. Sh!t happens.

I knew the systems hard reset on a downgrade. Now I'm going to have to go and yank the SW out of our office switch and re-insert it just to see if it retains programming. :)
