Base Alarm 01F: Corrupt voice prompt ROM. Halt.

I am pretty new at this; so please be patient. I cant get anything out of this machine -- F 983.

The unit has a PCMCIA card inserted and an Expansion Cartridge NTAB2385 mounted. I guess the Exp. is the 4 channels for the voicemail right?

The Voicemail went dead a few days ago, all I get is inactive feature. The office was shut down for the holidays and when we came back it was caput.

Can I put the PCMCIA card in my Laptop and read the Data off it? I guess this is where the voicemail gets recorded correct?

I have no other tools with this other than the terminal connection and hyperterminal (not even a manual).

I am browsing through the messages on this forum and its very helpful -- but I am hitting the knowledge (lack there of) wall.

Any thoughts or ideas?

WB,
Ugly. Couldn't find 01F in my docs but suggest reseat PCMCIA card, then reboot.
You cannot just put the PCMCIA card into any reader. If problem persists, call your vendor.

Thanks for the reply; I did the reseat -- it didnt work.. Same message.

I can mount the card in my laptop.. but I dont have drivers for it :)

The rom thats failing.. is that on the PCMCIA, Expansion Card or Main board?

Ohh.. I have no vendor for this item.

What I have noticed is that the OS for the machine must be on the PCMCIA card. If I boot with another card in the machine it doesnt show anything. If I boot without the exander and the CPMCIA (original) it boots and gives the same error. I guess the faulty rom is not on the expander.

No you can't read the PCMCIA card off of your laptop. What's happened is the voice mail has reset itself, and probably means everything on the voice mail is gone. What's happened is that the feature codes 980-989 are still programmed in your actual phone system, and when the voicemail reset, it programmed itself into DIFFERENT feature access codes because 980-989 are still "in use" even though the voice mail isn't using them anymore. I won't tell what the second set of feature codes are. Don't be cheap and call in your dealer to fix the problem for you.

Oh by the way, if they tell you that your PCMCIA card needs replaced, they're full of it.

I have no dealer and no one wants to take it on. I called another group in and all they say is that they can upgrade the system(which is 10,000$). So I'm in the Rock in hard place.. Tonnes of people bitching without voicemail.

I dont care if I get the voicemail back.. I just want the damn voicemail working.

Now if the voicemail has reprogrammed itself -- why is it failing to boot with a bad voice rom? I could understand an error knocking out the lines and re programming them to different ones -- but the boot failure? Is that just an OS issue (pcmcia) or just a bad chip on the board?

At the risk of sounding "full of it" there is a 98% chance that the software card is corrupt. Programming is saved on the motherboard of the Flash, not in the PCMCIA card. Chances are that replacing the software card will bring the system back to life with your programming intact.

you probably cant read the pcmcia card on your laptop .but if you connect to the flash with your laptop you can see the script as it boots up.
this might give you a better idea what is failing you can see all the connect messages and any error messages there might be.

I'm with phonefella, the first thing you should to do is initialize the feature codes (f980-f989). f983 will not work until you do that. i've seen that happen to many times to count.

Wbochar,

To cut to the chase here... Conduct an XFTEST (See FAQ) clear inactive codes.
Connect the flash to the KSU, boot. Allow 15 full minutes for boot up. Try dialing F983, 903, and F9*1 and tell us what you get. If you have no response except 'inactive featrure' you likely have a hooped card. If you have response post it here.

I did the xftest and gave it 15 mins.. I hook up the cable to the box and get this :

Nortel Norstar Flash Diagnostics Started. Please wait.
NVRam Test: Passed
B84 Test: Passed
Program ROM: Passed
Voice Prompt ROM: Failed. Alarm Code: 01F

Base Alarm 01F: Corrupt voice prompt ROM. Halt.

f983,903... inactive feature

Wbochar,
It is time to bring in a vendor who can get you a new card or work further in depth than you have done, which is none too shabby. The vendors are called 'interconnect companies' and can be found in the yellow pages under telephone, service equipment and repair.
While I thought Brian (exmogger) was correct in the beginning, your last work mostly proved it for me.
Find the vendor and good luck!

Cheers
PhM
