I have a Windows 2000 PC with an on-board soundcard. The audio output to speakers/headphones works fine, but neither the Line In nor Mic inputs give me any sound - this is even with the standard Windows Sound Recorder.

The audio hardware is an Intel 82801AA controller, with Windows AC97 audio driver (version 5.0.2184.1). I've tried re-installing the driver. Windows reports all devices as working properly and I see no duplicate devices or hardware conflicts.

I know my input sources (guitar+effects/mic.) are OK, as I've used them before on a previous PC, and I've re-checked all my cables are OK.

So what's wrong - any ideas ?

Make sure the volume is properly adjusted and the 'Mute' box is unchecked for the 'Line In' option in Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio/Playback.

If the volume is adjusted, and all of the input devices are known to work ok, then the input port may be bad.

Has it always been that way? Or did the problem just come up? What make and model mobo?
Some mobos have various settings that must be set on the mobos themselves.

It's always been like this (first time I've tried it anyway). Its a Gateway 650 Mhz PIII, Belarc advisor reports the motherbaord as an Intel WL810E AAA27218-204

Don't forget to check that the specific input is selected in the 'Recording' section of the properties of the Volume Control. It quite often is set to one of the others so it won't work regardless of whether the line-in is un-muted.

Open the Volume Control window and go Options --> Properties. Select the 'Recording' radio button and then the Line in fader and make sure the level is up

Yes, I checked the Record options on Volume Control and have Line In or Mic selected

Have you checked the gateway website for drivers for this mobo, or checked FAQ section via search method, other options at the gateway website? You just might find info on this subject. Maybe others have had same prob.

How about putting in a cheap sound card (disable onboard sound), to see if this eliminates the problem. If it cures it - possible bad mother board. If it has the same problem - input equipment (or driver) problem.

OK, I found it. I have a Speaker Phone input on my modem card that I never use - I tried disabling the driver for this and hey presto ! the AC97 inputs now work.

Thanks for your help guys.
