Just heard on a radio...

Question: 'Doing THIS can cut your chances of getting sick by 25%. What is it?'

In 2 days this question was answered and the answer was 'Having a night out...'

Here I am trying to 'get it'...what is the 'night out?'
and what kind of night out can help us to be healthier...

I guess it's referring to the R&R properties of a relaxing night out. Unless of course it becomes something of a 'night on the tiles' in which case it might have the opposite effect to that intended!

...the old "All-work-and-on-play" theory. I, however, am invigorated by my work and would rather work than play...Classic Work-a-holic Syndrome I guess...but since I've been on a weight-loss/health craze for the past year, I've never felt healthier, despite my not changing my work habits. I believe that's "My 25% Healthier" factor.

See, now I would have answered that with "Regular hand washing". But probably only because that was drummed into my head by the health care industry (which I work in).

Of course, my saying about that is:

"Cleanliness is next to.... well... impossible!"

lol

It is not getting warmer...is it a really difficult question?

Well... It depends. It depends on how basic/detailed/visual a response you need.

Night out is a slang, or, rather, a colloquial term for a social event out of your home undertaken for recreational purposes, usually after a day of work. It may include a movie or a play, a meal in a restaurant, a sports event, or other entertainment out in the city/town. Usually is carried out with your significant other or friends.

Since the main purpose of a night out is recreation, relaxation, communication, and entertainment, it can help you unwind and, thus, cut the risk of stress (and we all know how many health problems are stress-related).

The authors of that radio show probably were referring to some obscure research that proved, or maybe only hinted at this 25% cut in sickness rate.

You can start more detailed research on the terms like "Girl's Night Out", "Boy's Night Out", "Parents' Night Out", etc., with this link:

Is this what you were looking for?

Well, I know what is night out means I just couldn't think of night out that will prolong my life...usually it is more of a gaining headache then health lol

I think stella hit it everything about our health (or lack of) seems to be stress related. So a GOOD NIGHT OUT can help you relax.

CRilliterate,

I did realize that you, most likely, know the term. But you were so persistent, I couldn't resist somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but still to-the-point (and as linguistic as I could) answer.

I got to say that the question you were really asking is not in the scope of this forum. You need probably something medical or alike. ;-)

May I ask you, what's your first language?

Maybe Guinness helps kill the germs that cause the common cold.

You are on the right track. It might, especially when the cold is just starting out. Even though, to kill germs, something stronger is needed.
Same thing with stomach bugs. Several times on different occasions, when I didn't drink or drank beverages not strong enough with some questionable foods, and others had something strong while eating the same thing, I was the one that ended with problems, and others had just hangovers, at most. :)

Disclaimer: I am talking from experience, common knowledge/opinion, and observation. I am not a medical professional.

Stella,

I am of course can guess anything in relation 'night out' and most of it not health improving 'outs' so I was very curious what am I missing, what kinds of 'nights out' there is that I am not aware of unfortunatelly and I would insisit on linguistic value of my question because so far nobody answered it including native English speakers.

It was pretty simple - night out that improves your health.
So far we still do not have an answer and I am still very curious and I am thinking of calling B101.1 to ask. The problem is it is almost impossible to get through.

You're not actually expecting us to explain the hyperbolic verbal diarrhea on some radio station's bumper reel, are you?

Quit overanalyzing it and interpret it as white noise that is fed into the possible dead air between broadcast and commercials. Even if you get through to the station, no one there is going to be able to explain it to five decimal places.

I think you misunderstood.
It is not "night out that improves your health"; this sounds like there is some special kind of night out that may improve your health, and other kinds don't.

It is more like "a night out", or, rather, "an occasional night out" to unwind you and switch your mind from everyday activities to something different may help you avoid stress.

When you have way too frequent night outs ending in hangovers, and they become your everyday (everynight?) activity, they may lead to stress AND alcoholism, so you may need at least an occasional "day out" at work, or "day in"/"night in" at home, to unwind.

But I like what sleipnir214 said.

And I guess your first language is a secret. Right?

It all depends on what you do with your 'night out'. If you take 'night out' to mean all night partying, getting blitz, and that sort of stuff, then it's not likely to yield any substantial health benefits.

On the other hand, if a night out is to go out with friends and have a drink or two, share a few laughs, break the monotony of your routine, and in general, blow off some steam, then you can achieve some benefits, exactly as Stella740pl said in a previous post.

The linguistic issue here is one of semantics. What does 'night out' mean?

Good Luck

I can tell you what's a night out for me.
I don't do "ladies' night out".
I usually do "parents' night out".
Sometimes we may do a night out with common friends.

Even though we have frequent "days out" with child(ren),
for a night out we (me and my husband) ask grandparents to babysit our little one, and go to a show/movie/opera/exhibition, etc., and end it with a dinner in a nice restaurant with a glass of wine or a cocktail.
Doing this drastically improves my health, especially mental. :)

But now, I really need a vacation, night out is not enough.

I also have nights out, I do know what is night out means. I just thought...well, it is getting too silly. Thanks anyway

Cr, are you sure "a night out" was the answer?
I ask because the answer I find is "eating yogurt".
USA Weekend said:
In a yearlong test, subjects who ate 3/4 cup of yogurt daily had 25 percent fewer colds than non-yogurt eaters. It's best to start at least three months ahead of cold season, says physician and researcher George Halpern of the University of California at Davis, because it takes time for yogurt to boost your resistance to germs. Halpern has found that eating two cups of yogurt each day for four months spurred a fourfold increase in the body's production of gamma interferon, which helps fight infection. The protection lasted for two months after the yogurt-eating ended.
If not, maybe that is why they call it Impossible Question.

Do you think this is some kind of riddle? It's not. It's a piece of trivia. There's nothing to "get."

It's like asking, "Mammals of this Order are the only ones to lay eggs. What is it?" and answering "Monotremes." It's not a joke. There's no play on words or pun or anything remotely clever about it; it's just a simple fact.

If nothing so far has answered your question, then you aren't actually asking the question you want answered. You should consider rephrasing your attempts.
