Hi Everybody
I am completly new to in design I am 68 and a retired printer of 50 years.I have recently taken on the responsibilty of editor of our village magazine 400 copies and I have loads of issues which I will have to tackle one at a time.
OK issue one
I wish to create a frame with border + image say half A5 size and within that frame I wish to create another frame in the lower left corner to which I would like to put a folio (page number), but I would like the half frame to follow the contours around the inserted frame in order to leave the folio isolated.
I hope this makes sense.
If this sounds so basic to you all then I apologise but hey guys this grandad is trying to get with this technology
Thanks for at least looking
Johnnie

I have all the fonts in font folio 11

western which are open fonts in 437 folders (installed)
and
western type 1 which are Pi ornament fonts in 25 folders

there are also others I.E. Japanese etc (not wanted)

Now it is fair to say that I don't even know whether the Pi fonts go into windows or what happens to them or do I need them probably not but I would like to find out just what they are for. The help pages at Adobe don't appear to be much help and I just wondered because you have such a good knowledge of indesign had come across them.

Well, I know what the problem is. You don't have the font. It's like buying a really nice car without the engine.

Thanks I will go back to the disk & make sure I have not missed Something & if there is nothing there I will have to find out why

Hi Eugene
I went back to the disk and I think the Type 1 Pi ornaments folder must be for another application so I don't think I will pursue that any further, well not now anyhow.

Going back to the text image boxes that you guided me through earlier, I got in a bit of a mess this morning because.

I already had a page number in a grey triangle with black text and I decided to create a text box with text, when I drew the box taking in the grey with number over it the text went but left the grey triangle so I left the text box above the grey in order to keep the number exposed.
Also when I tried to draw an image box over that all the text in the text box vanished do you think I may be performing these tasks in the wrong order I am obviously doing something quite wrong
I made sure all colours/swatches were neutral except the text
Regards Johnnie

Hi Eugene
Sorry about this but forget the above at the moment

when I do the function on a new page there is no problem but going back to the previous page

as I drag either the image or the text box down slowly as soon as it touches the number the number goes and a small box with a plus sign jumps into the new box

I am trying hard here to explain what is happening but I have spent hours trying this today and I just wish I could see what I am doing wrong
Regards Johnnie

Hi

You are probably moving the type out of the text box.
Grab the bottom of the text box and drag it down until it is large enough to hold the text.

Remember the text breaks when it hits the edge of the box but when it gets to the bottom it just disappears and the little plus sigh appears to tell you that there is more text available then shows in the box.

I am 70 so don't give up you'll get it eventually.

I still remember when after a whole career spent on a drawing board with magic markers and layout pads I had to finally make the switch to computers. I was used to having some one else set all my type for me. I didn't even know how to type!

Had to learn everything from scratch but I did it eventually.

To bad you don't live near Grand Rapids MI we could get together and I could give you a run through of the basics.

Mike

Ps.

I wish they would let you edit these posts.

Just remember if you see the little + sign it means that there is text that does not show that is connected to that box.

Mike

Thanks Mike
But that is not quite the problem
yes shame I am not nearer by about 4 or 5K
Regards Johnnie

Johnnie, sometimes it's hard to visualise what you're doing, can you do a step by step screen shot for me?

Thank you Eugene
I will make some screen shots step by step have to go out right now but back later

then I will give myself a quick resume on how to upload them :) :)

Hi Eugene
here are four shots (numbered 1 to 4)what I am trying to achieve is as 2 + 3 drag the box and leave the folio text intact, some guidance in all 4 would also be appreciated

Turn off the Text Wrap for the box you're moving down.

Or the box with the folio, right click, text frame options>Ignore Text Wrap.

Thank you very much indeed you would not believe the amount of time I have spent with this

It just goes to show you have to click the right functions
but then you have to know what the right functions are in the first place
Regards Johnnie

Is there any way that a group of fonts can be bunched together so that they show together.
Like if I had some favourite fonts that I could group in order to save me trawling through all the available fonts
