Hi Everybody
I am completly new to in design I am 68 and a retired printer of 50 years.I have recently taken on the responsibilty of editor of our village magazine 400 copies and I have loads of issues which I will have to tackle one at a time.
OK issue one
I wish to create a frame with border + image say half A5 size and within that frame I wish to create another frame in the lower left corner to which I would like to put a folio (page number), but I would like the half frame to follow the contours around the inserted frame in order to leave the folio isolated.
I hope this makes sense.
If this sounds so basic to you all then I apologise but hey guys this grandad is trying to get with this technology
Thanks for at least looking
Johnnie

the X and Y co-ordinates that was the one I wanted thank you

In Fairness Nicole, that is standard practice in most adobe programs, I guess I just forget sometimes that not everyone is up to speed on the apps as others. So inadvertently I do leave out steps which I and others would automatically do.

I have twenty pages 10x 2x A5 laid out in one file as I complete one page with whatever content how can I export that one page to PDF in order to view the quality /layout etc without having to export all the other pages as well until I am ready
Regards Johnnie

Same as you do when you decide to print out a range of pages, you select Pages: 2-14 or Pages: 3, 5, 9

2-14 will print all pages from and including 2 - 14

3, 5, 9 will print pages 3, 5, 9

So pick a page you want to print and choose the range of e.g., 3

You do this in the FILE>EXPORT select PDF from the Drop Down list and select your page in the Page Range of the General Tab.

Be sure to choose Hi-Res PDF from the menu if you're checking quality.

You can also check quality in the InDesign document.

View>Display Performance> High Quality.

If you're worried about PPI or DPI of the image you can select an image in InDesign and choose

Window>Info.

When the image is highlighted, you will see in the info Panel two things in particular, Actual PPI and Effective PPI.

Actual PPI will refer to the actual pixels per inch the image has, it's resolution.

Effective PPI will refer to the resolution that the image prints at.

What you need for print is an Effective PPI of 300 PPI.

For example, you could have an Image with:

Actual PPI: 100

Effective PPI: 300

What this means is that the image is just 100 PPI. But you've reduced the size of the image to 2/3 of the original size.

So actually your image is 9 inches wide, but you've inserted it as 3 inches, effectively reducing it's size to 2/3, which affects the effective ppi, effectively increasing it.

Conversely if your image is:

Actual PPI: 300

Effective PPI: 100

That means that your image is 300 PPI, but you've placed it at a size that has x3 bigger than the original.

So if you're image is 9 inches wide, for example, then you have placed it at 27 inches wide, effectively reducing the size of the resolution to 100 ppi.

Forgot to mention, in Acrobat, you can go to Document>Extract Pages and choose to extract them as single pages.

Ho Eugenedyson
I am still having trouble selecting an individual page to export.
The first page I selected was ok and it happened to be page 9 but after that I kept getting an error box. Anyhow I will leave that for now as I have to practice more on what you have pointed out above.

Another little niggle I have is:-
A block of text in a text box and I get to the end and would like to change my mind and stick another line say in the middle
1. How do I part the text in order for me to insert a line or even a word
2. Similar how do I move a line of text down a line at a time??

can I just say how much I appreciate your input & help
Regards Johnnie

Johnnie, I would think you just put the cursor in the line of text and press return and keep on typing.

There's no need to insert TABS when you get to the end of line, the container will hold all the text, so when the text hits the edge of the container then it will automatically go to the next line.

If your text box (container) starts missing text, look for a RED PLUS very small at the bottom of the text box. If you see this it means that the text is overflowing, basically too much text for the container.

So what you simply do is selecet the text box with the Black Arrow tool and then double click the Middle Hollow Handle (Square) at the the bottom of the container. That will resize the text to the necessary size.

You have to use the TEXT tool, to insert text.

Window>Tools to bring up or hide the TOOLS, they appear on the left. The TEXT Tool is the one with the T for an icon.

I would think you just put the cursor in the line of text and press return and keep on typing
------------------------------------------------------------
This is the niggle!
every time I put a curser & press enter from that point the text disappears.

a click on edit shows UNDO COLUMN BREAK so I assume that is what happens

You're pressing Enter on the Number Pad. Press the key that has a reverse L-shaped arrow.

That's the Return Key. The Enter Key on the Number Pad will insert a "column break".

You are absolutely 100% right another niggle in the bag

Thank you

How do I type white fonts onto a black background

Type your text, select it using the black arrow tool, choose WINDOW>SWATCHES and select PAPER, paper is white.

...well done eugene for sticking with it for 33 posts!...

...longest i've seen for, well, probably ever!

...have a splat too!

I agree,Eugene has been a great help to me in my quest to learn about this programme and answer my persistant questions.
It is never easy learning a new programme with just a help file to assist and Eugene lays it out in a quite understandable easy to follow way.
It is also never easy to explain about a complex programme to a newbie even more so a 68 year old one.So thank you Eugene your a pal.
My next question is :)

Regards Johnnie

Hi Eugene
In Adobe font folio V11 there are
Western Fonts and
Western Fonts type 1 I.E.Pi Ornament Fonts

I have coped with the western fonts OK which I have put into the windows font folder BUT

the Type 1 fonts I cannot seem to get into the Adobe folder
(where I believe they are supposed to go)AFM files

Do have a take on this at all
Regards Johnnie

Is there any plugin? that will help me with my question(previous post)
I downloaded ATM(Adobe Type Manager)but that does not seem to help (not sure whether it should)and the help files don't seem much help either. One thing is certain they will not go into the windows font folder.

Johnnie, you will have to get the fonts, either TrueType or OpenType versions. AFM files are only parts of the fonts, not the fonts themselves.
