I want to start by marking my experance so it might help everyone understand where i am comming from. i have never installed phone switches before and i have only installed phone and data jacks and patch panels.

i have a nortel norstar- plus modular ics system that is not allowing any of the phones hooked up to it to call out they are all convinced that the phone numbers i am dialing are extentions not outside lines no matter if i dial 9 or 99 or anything like that. however i do get calls in on line one but i cant call out even when i press line 1. i dont know anything about the programing or the way the line in antonal tell is supposed to be wired just how to sort of determine the extentions and activate them.

thanks in advance for your help.

As luv used to say
call a vendor...you are in way over your head and things can and will only get worse

lugerlover is right. You are in way over your head. Many things can be accomplished on this forum but to do what you are wanting you really need to have some experience under your belt. Don't be offended by it but you need to call a vendor.

Thanks. i was kinda thinking i was at my limit, was hopin to progress a little further if nothing else for the sake of knowledge and experiance but sometimes you can only go so far on your own. do you have any suggestions other then goin to nortel on how to further my education / test my knowlege? my goal is to do this professionally as well as an extention of my IT department.

One thing is to go on line and get the Install & Cord guides. Theres alot of good info in there.

is there an exact name for it. i have googled for that kind of stuff and find a bunch of resources and have been reviewing them just havent found any that would help me with phone switches

i have found that 3 lines dont work on the operator phone. lines 5 7 and 8. there is no dial tone, in the manual i downloaded it shows wiring for lines 1-4 then 25-28. i dont understand why that is or why the 3 lines dont work and i have noticed that all the phones seem to want to default to line 5. i appricate the tolerance and patience involved in helping me with this.

You also may want to check if you have pools attached to those lines. If they are not being directed to a pool they will not have the ability to make calls out but rather only recieve them

im still a bit foggy on that topic i appricate the help. i found out this morning that i will be unable to bring in anyone to assist me and the project deadline is friday.

the one question i have. is this setup was working 100% in a different location all i did was moved it from one wire closet to another. kept all the blocks and cross connects together to hopefully keep the install time down. the only thing different is there is new cable ran to the phones >extentions< not sure what that changes if anything

maybe your system defaulted or lost programming when you powered down...you did a backup right?if so do the reinstall..if no call a vendor

and project deadlines as with rules were made to be broken

If they wont allow you to bring in help, which is obviously needed, then they can't expect you to have this completed by friday.

Not sure on your line issue but you use every 2 pins on the Bix or 66 block
1,2,X,X,3,4,X,X,25,26,X,X,27,28 etc

If system did keep programming then the date should be the same if powered backup at new location same day.
Do a Feature * 0 then press any key and look at display to see if key matches what's said on display, when pressing intercom key it will tell you ext #.
If programming kept but ext's in wrong space you could go into Maintenance programming and lookup each port then write down ext then recross connect right port to right jack or turn set relocation on and and move right set to right location.

i appricate the information. the dead line is being made flexable due to my lack of ability. as far as not bringing someone in its a cant not a wont situation, cost wise its un affordable. the system power was off and disconnected for roughly 45 mins before i powered it up. it seems to have retained the programing >has line names, music on hold activited ect< as far as the extentions they are still in order on the 66 block and ports from what it looks like <200,201,202,203,204,205, ect>. i dont know how to determine the card types to see if they are DID E&M or DTI, im not sure if or how that would affect things but i do have the lines setup every couple pairs and have reverified them with the manual i downloaded they appear to be correct.

TD homa i think you are right. i think it might be a line pool issue i just cant figure out how to get into check it. the admin password doesnt seem to work and in the standard installer menus it doesnt seem to get me to the.

according to the switch i have to loop cartridges in there one is a Loop start trunk cartridge and the other is LS/DS Analog Trunk Cartridge from what i can tell. and im running a MICS 4.0 s/w ver 5.01

all the physical connections are correct and double checked. now it comes to the software issues.

thanks again for all of your help.

Hey guys i wanted to thank all of you for the help. sorry i havent posted for so long, kinda became a victim of my own success. the switch is working now. it appears to have been a hardware problem more then a software. i took a butt set and went through all the feed lines to see if i have a dial tone and on afew i didnt. turns out this whole time there was someone goofin off in the D-mark for the build and disconnected a few of my lines from down there. plus i had to re ire the connections anyway they appare to have been abused a bit during the move that i didnt catch before.

anyways thank you once again for the help and hopefully my next post wont be so fundimental or newbie-ish i did find the manuals that teach me how to wire and program these switches and have been studying them hard to avoid problems like this in the future.

btw i did make my dead-line a day early :D

thanks again and take care.
