I have built a new system, P4 1.6, 512MBRAM DDR PC 2100, 80GB WD, ATA100,but it seem slow. The MB is aGigabyte P4 Titan, GA-8SR533 series. What I need to know is what to set the BIOS for in regards to speed and any other suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks,
Dave
Since it has PC2100 RAM I assume it has 266mhz FSB speed. That is the most common speed that needs to be changed. Many mobos come with clock frequency with a default setting at 100mhz. Setting a jumper or BIOS setting can change it to 133mhz. (266mhz bus)
Make sure your CPU multiplier is set, I believe it should be 12x (or 6x) but double check that. 133mhz*12 about 1600mhz
Make sure all of your CPU stuff is enabled (Cache, etc).
I know with EPOX and ASUS, there needs to be motherboard drivers needs to be installed in Windows. To get things up to speed, such as IDE bus (faster hard drive transfer speed), AGP Bus. If you have a good video card, check for driver updates such as NVidia Detonator Drivers.
djones7936,
Remember that the P4 1.6 uses the 100MHz front-side bus (effectively 100 x 4 for 400MHz "quad-pumped" FSB).
LDaveM,
What operating system? Win98/2000/XP? Since it's a newly built system, you might want to make sure every IDE device is using DMA (Direct Memory Access). Also wouldn't hurt to make sure the hard drive is working with ATA/100 (UDMA-5). I don't know if Gigabyte has one, but there's a utility that comes with Intel motherboards called Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver Companion that tells you what every IDE device is using. So, you might want to check Gigabyte's website to see if they have a similar utility available.
Here's a recent discussion on DMA:
