Iam running a NetBIOS network, and I just reinstalled windows98SE and setup all of my network properties, now my computer does not prompt me to log into the network. So in order to connect, I have to log out, then i get the network login prompt.

I would like to make the computer prompt for network loggon at boot.. any ideas??

Thank you in advance!

Thank you!!!

Go to the networks control panel, and ensure that the client for Microsoft networks is set as the primary logon (rather than Microsoft Windows Logon which only covers the local PC)

John

Also, make sure that the Domain is specified in the Client for Microsoft Networks properties, and the Logon to Domain box is checked. If these are already done, I suspect you have a registry issue. I've seen this once before, where Windows wouldn't find the domain on first bootup, but it would after you logged off. I had to restore a registry backup. One other solution, you might create an lmhosts file, save it in the Windows directory, make sure you include the tag to specify your domain name.

Do you mean the part where it says use Quick Login, or Login and restore all network drives?

Thank you!

Sorry, I may have assumed too much. If you don't have a domain, ignore what I typed about typing the domain name and checking the box. Try removing and reinstalling Client for Microsoft Networks.

I have the same problem with my MD laptop.the thing is when the machine starts,it automatically logs in to win98 without asking for a password. But in order to use the network resources he needs to logout and login to the domain.

Yes i have client for microsoft newtork selected.I even tried to uninstall the client for microsoft newtork but it didnt work.I dont want to uninstall the nac as i dont have drivers for it.

Pls help

iron151, has this laptop ever had MS Powertoys or TweakUI (or whatever it was called)?. There is some autologon setting in there that can cause this. If that's not the case, try deleting or renaming all the *.pwl files on the machine. If none of that helps, post back - there is a registry setting somewhere that will take care of it that we can look for.

I have no idea wether any tweakui or any other software was installed coz he has just joined our company.I have also checked with MD he says he has no clue of it.What shall i rename *.pwl files to.. If u dont mind can u tell me what does this *.pwl file do.

tks

Iron151

A .PWL file is a PassWord List. It stores the 'remembered passwords' for each user, in an encrypted format, in a file named after the login ID with a .PWL extension.
By deleting this file, you are effectively telling Windows to forget every remembered password in the system for that particular user.

It doesn't matter what you rename the PWL files to, as this is the extension that Windows uses to recognise it. If you call them .PWBAK that would be fine, and it allows them to be easily reinstated in the future if necessary.

You can check and see if Tweak UI has been installed on the PC by looking for a Tweak UI icon in control panel, or if it is not there, do a search for tweakui.cpl on the hard drive in case it has been disabled or hidden from the users.

I havent been able to get WIn98SE to give me that screen yet. Any other ideas?

If you can't find a Tweak UI icon in control panel, or on the hard drive, then it is probably not installed on your PC.
You can check if the Autologon setting that Smah refers to is set by opening the registry editor (regedit.exe) and do a search for AutoAdminLogon.
If it is set to a value of 1 (it will not be set if you can't find it) it will use the DefaultUsername and password keys in that same area of the registry. (Note: the password is stored in plain ASCII text in Win95/98).
I don't have a Win9x box to hand to check out the exact location (I am using 2K), but it is likely to be something like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

If you find this AutoAdminLogon setting, change the 1 to a 0 then shut down and restart the computer.

It may help to look at the settings on your network card. If your network card cannot automatically negotiate a connection to the network it will not give a login box initially but seems to work by logging off the first session.
Set the speed and duplex mode to the same as your network hub or switch.

I think you may have skipped over this suggestion when you were confused about something else: When you open network properties, in the drop down menu under Primary Network Logon, make sure you have client for Microsoft networks selected. Hit ok and reboot. If you tried this already please ignore this. I hope it helps though.

smah,

I had this same problem here, and couldn't seem to resolve it. After following your find on the MS article I deleted the one reg entry they suggested "autologon" and rebooted.

Wala... it now prompts for login at bootup.

Thanks for the find.

I tried all of those methods, and it still wont work. :( I think I am doomed.

Try deleting the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

AutoLogon=xx

After you have made a backup copy of the registry of course!

I assume the second logon box you get is windows logon and not the network logon box? try removing the lan adapter from the device manager and re-boot let windows re-install the drivers for the lan card and check it has no hardware problems.

Thank you Paulwood, that did it.!

Supurb!!

Thank you!!!
