I have a client trying to access some microsoft office files on a network share through her mapped network drive. She can browse the directories no problem but whenever she tries to open a file up it takes FOREVER or it crashes the application depending on the size of the file. If I copy the file to the desktop it opens up alot faster, but some of the files that she access are HUGE and would take forever to copy to the desktop and vise versa. I tried unistalling office 97 and reinstalling but still have the same issue no matter which user logs in.

Anybody know what is going on here, is it the memory (not enough) or is it something else I'm over looking

Please any help would do, I'm almost at the the point of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows and all the apps but i'm afraid that this issue will just occur again.

Any suggestions???????????????????????????????

Thanks

We need a bit more info here.

How is the speed of opening the files on other desktops?
Have you tried disabling (and if that fails, uninstalling) any antivirus package that might be running? How big are these files?

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

If I open the file from my desktop it opens fine (not slow or no crash)

One of the files is an excel file only 1.75MB (will open after 5 minutes)and the other is a access file it is 464MB, this is the one that crashes.

I've tried disabling the antivirus, issue remains

Any Ideas?

Thanks

The 464mb Access file does not suprise me. Do you both run the same version of office? What is the difference in processor speeds on your pc versus the other one. Try uninstalling the antivirus. Perhaps forcing a 100mb full duplex link, or changing the network card out.

Matt

We are both running the same version of office and my PC is slower than hers, I would try a different nic card but it is a compac with on board nic and no pci slots (how convenient). gonna try unistalling the antivirus.

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Try changing the link as I suggested, if removing the antivirus doesn't help.

If you think it is a nic issue and you have no slots then you could try a USB 10/100 Ethernet network LAN Adapter to RJ45. We use them when there is no nic in a computer that comes in for service. To do updates for the OS.
