Symptoms: Move and Paste feature were considerable slower in comparison with other systems in the network. Problem presents when user move several 1 kb files from one network share to another, even when they are parent and child directories.
1) When I started its troubleshooting I called Dell Support team to open a service call in case parts need to be ordered.
2) Simultaneously I initiate a hardware diagnostic by accessing the Dell's utility partition. Results came back with the nothing abnormal, inboard network card passed the screening.
a. Dell's technician explained the hardware scan is intended to work better when the part is unresponsive.
3) He suggested the problem was related to Windows
a.I dissented with him due to one thing; my co-worker threw a new PCI network card (D-link DGC-500T) when I disabled the inboard card, the D-link card worked fine.
b. I debated the issue was related to hardware, Dell agreed to change the whole motherboard.
4)After the new hardware was installed initially the speed was back to normal concerning moving and pasting files on the network but after user logged off and I log back later to test the card myself in the problem returned.
5) I called back Dell; they recommended updating drivers on the new inboard card to latest, which I did. They recommended the following troubleshooting steps:
a. Edit the startup using msconfig and remove any non-OS related application running that might interfere with the card behavior.
b. I also removed any other application that was not really a need to perform work related tasks
c. They also recommended to set different media type configuration to see if one of them might work, I tried 1000 Auto-negotiate, auto-negotiate; 100 full and Half; 10 Full and Half; nothing was effective, problem persisted with every different configuration.
d. Dell suggested performing a “Netsh Diag scan”, the report came back with everything fine. No hardware related issues
e. Dell support team recommended to o an OS repair because they kept insisting the issue was related to hardware.
6) I even went to the NIC’s manufactured to obtain their latest and installed them. Problem persisted.
a. The NIC manufacture had their own diagnostic tool, I ran it and it couldn't find any problem with the hardware itself. Tests were passed fine.
7) I finally agreed to run a OS repair but before doing it I created an ASR backup on the problem system and dumped the backup file in an external hard drive.
a. After repair was performed several issues were reported besides the initial NIC problem: Office was unresponsive, no windows update were installed. After uninstalling and re-installing office and reapplying all windows updates (88 in total). This last action was proven to be a little bit harder than just select and approve updates due to stealth windows update the installation failed. Based on the “Stealth Windows Up-date prevents XP repair” extracted from Windows Secrets ( the problem was fixed.
b. What I noticed after the repair was completed is that the moving and pasting were working just fine but after the updates situation was fixed and they were applied the moving went back to the same previous behavior. Then I decided to uninstall one by one the updates to determine which one was the causing of all the trouble. I went back uninstalling up to 65 updates and none of them proved to be the problem.
8) Then we decided to work with the other network card and suppressed the inboard because it proved to work in the beginning but after the repair took place the second network card had the same problem.
a. The new network card is a D-link DGE-500T 1000/100/10 Mbps, I tried unsuccessful to re-install the latest drivers, uninstalling\reinstalling the device and it seems to work the first time the NIC is recognized by the system but after logging off and log back on the problem reappears every time.
9) Dell at this point recommended as only choice left to rebuild the system from scratch.
I’m in the other hand still reluctant to follow that route and want to share this situation with all of you to see if there is someone out there that had experienced a same\similar situation and know how to fix it before taking the decision of rebuild the system.
