Symptoms: Move and Paste feature were considerable slower in comparison with other systems in the network. Problem presents when user move several 1 kb files from one network share to another, even when they are parent and child directories.
1) When I started its troubleshooting I called Dell Support team to open a service call in case parts need to be ordered.
2) Simultaneously I initiate a hardware diagnostic by accessing the Dell's utility partition. Results came back with the nothing abnormal, inboard network card passed the screening.
a. Dell's technician explained the hardware scan is intended to work better when the part is unresponsive.
3) He suggested the problem was related to Windows
a.I dissented with him due to one thing; my co-worker threw a new PCI network card (D-link DGC-500T) when I disabled the inboard card, the D-link card worked fine.
b. I debated the issue was related to hardware, Dell agreed to change the whole motherboard.
4)After the new hardware was installed initially the speed was back to normal concerning moving and pasting files on the network but after user logged off and I log back later to test the card myself in the problem returned.
5) I called back Dell; they recommended updating drivers on the new inboard card to latest, which I did. They recommended the following troubleshooting steps:
a. Edit the startup using msconfig and remove any non-OS related application running that might interfere with the card behavior.
b. I also removed any other application that was not really a need to perform work related tasks
c. They also recommended to set different media type configuration to see if one of them might work, I tried 1000 Auto-negotiate, auto-negotiate; 100 full and Half; 10 Full and Half; nothing was effective, problem persisted with every different configuration.
d. Dell suggested performing a “Netsh Diag scan”, the report came back with everything fine. No hardware related issues
e. Dell support team recommended to o an OS repair because they kept insisting the issue was related to hardware.
6) I even went to the NIC’s manufactured to obtain their latest and installed them. Problem persisted.
a. The NIC manufacture had their own diagnostic tool, I ran it and it couldn't find any problem with the hardware itself. Tests were passed fine.
7) I finally agreed to run a OS repair but before doing it I created an ASR backup on the problem system and dumped the backup file in an external hard drive.
a. After repair was performed several issues were reported besides the initial NIC problem: Office was unresponsive, no windows update were installed. After uninstalling and re-installing office and reapplying all windows updates (88 in total). This last action was proven to be a little bit harder than just select and approve updates due to stealth windows update the installation failed. Based on the “Stealth Windows Up-date prevents XP repair” extracted from Windows Secrets ( the problem was fixed.
b. What I noticed after the repair was completed is that the moving and pasting were working just fine but after the updates situation was fixed and they were applied the moving went back to the same previous behavior. Then I decided to uninstall one by one the updates to determine which one was the causing of all the trouble. I went back uninstalling up to 65 updates and none of them proved to be the problem.
8) Then we decided to work with the other network card and suppressed the inboard because it proved to work in the beginning but after the repair took place the second network card had the same problem.
a. The new network card is a D-link DGE-500T 1000/100/10 Mbps, I tried unsuccessful to re-install the latest drivers, uninstalling\reinstalling the device and it seems to work the first time the NIC is recognized by the system but after logging off and log back on the problem reappears every time.
9) Dell at this point recommended as only choice left to rebuild the system from scratch.
I’m in the other hand still reluctant to follow that route and want to share this situation with all of you to see if there is someone out there that had experienced a same\similar situation and know how to fix it before taking the decision of rebuild the system.

Is this machine under any Warranty? It would be nice if you could just return it to Dell and let them sort it out. It is frustrating when you get stuck in the blame loop between manufacturer and software provider.

Did you try updating your Bios, or setting it to Safe defaults?

Speaking of safe, did you try the whole copying process from "Safe Mode With Networking"

If you do rebuild I suppose this time you will install one update at a time, rebooting and checking for problems as you go?

Sorry not much help, but I did at least read your detailed and lengthy post.

Thanks Linney,
For trying and reading this loong and booooring post, we do have warranty on the system but I don't think they will actually take the system back after two years of use. I did update the BIOS to the latest and set the defaults according with Dell specifications. I just forgot to mentioned it. I also did try the moving\pasting in safe mode and it worked fine. NOTE: the copying\pasting is not a problem only moving\pasting, making this troubleshooting a very very weird head-scratcher issue.
Thanks again,
Alex

Summing up, Copy and Paste works fine. Moving a file works, but is slow. How slow is "Slow" (compared to copying)?

Would something from this thread give you any idea of third party interference with the files during the Move?

BIT hidden files
thread779-1419986

What is available from Task Manager (CPU usage)?

Do you have access to the switch it's connected to?
Check that there is no duplex mismatch (e.g switch set to 100/Full and the pc set to Auto/Auto)/

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Linney,
Difference between copy\paste and move\paste and like night and day. Copying the same amount of files will take a 1-2 minutes. Moving will take 10-15 minutes. I read your thread and I will follow the KB256986 document. I am waiting for the computer to be available for troubleshooting and I will let everyone knows any improvements.
Thanks again,
Alex

StuReeves,
I am sorry for not replying before, yes we have access to the switches and both (switch port and nic card) are set to auto sense 1000 gbps. That is the same setting for the other computer right next to the one in trouble. None of them had reported issues like this one.
Alex

Alex,
You stated in you initial post that when your friend was logged on the equipment worked fine, but when you logged on the system went South. Have you tried creating yourself a new profile or at least a temporary profile?

Regards,
David.

DTracy,
We discarded the user's profile as a variable. I did remove my profile before repairing the OS, let other users to try it first and the problem starts again same way. In some cases, for example I would restore the system state on that computer, It will work fine on my profile and reported the issue as solved but as soon as the owners logs back in the error comes back. I think the issue is more a drivers issue then a profile issue but thank you so much for replying though.
Alex

If the driver is bad it should fail for anyone that logs in as they all use the same driver. \windows\system32\drivers\etc

I also did try the moving\pasting in safe mode and it worked fine".

Was that "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Did you follow up that path with a more granular approach as along these lines?

310353 - How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP

316434 - HOW TO: Perform Advanced Clean-Boot Troubleshooting in Windows XP

310560 - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

If you are unable to isolate a possible cause, and things still work in Safe Mode, that would tend to confirm your diagnoses of it being a driver problem.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Linney,
Yes the moving\pasting worked fine in Safe Mode with Networking.
I still have not tried it yet because I still don't have a downtime for it. User claimed he is using the system and will let me work on it until Wednesday afternoon. We'll see then, I truly believe is a driver related issue but I don't want to speculate anymore. I have done that more than enough with this situation. Thank you though for all your replies, I will keep you posted after Wednesday troubleshooting.
Respectfully,
Alex

You say there is a computer that works next to the one in question. Have you tried swapping network connections between the two including (or replacing) the network patch cable? As convinced as you are it is a driver issue, you've little to lose trying this too.

Freestone,
I did try that too. I even switched the cable with my laptop to check the connection and the moving\pasting worked fine in my laptop while using that connection.
Thanks for your input.
Alex

Linney and everybody that participate in this discussion,
Thank you very much for your help, I followed the guide from Microsoft that you pointed in your message (Article ID 316434)and due to that I was able to isolate the defective driver that was causing the problem when using the move\paste. It turned up to be the file checker for the Antivirus that was scanning block by block all the files that were transferring from one location to the other. As soon as I removed the files from the %windir%\system32\drivers as instructed in the article, the moving\pasting was working fine again, then it was only matter of time until I narrowed to the actual file. At the end I uninstall\re-install the Antivirus application and the problem was fixed for good.
One more time thank you very much all of you and my special gratitude to Linney for replying to my cry of help.
Sincerely,
Alex

Thank you for your kind comments, we are all part of a technical family here, and I am only passing on what others have told me over the years. Glad you have solved the problem.

Firewolfrl,
The antivirus was Mcafee not norton but thanks for inquiring. Like I said now everything is good now. Thanks again to all.
Respectfully,
Alex
