I just purchased the Netport serial to Ethernet adapter and would like to use it as an alternative to Socket Magix.

Has anyone tried this. I installed on Friday but could not connect to the magix. Is it possible that I need the 355A adapter? or maybe a null modem adapter? Do i need to tell the virtual comport to send out anything speacial. it wants a port address. I know 8080 is used for the web. what would be a port to use?

This is a link to the netport if anyone is curious.

Not sure about this, but since socket magix is made be the folks who make WinSPM, there is a good chance it will not work.

The netport uses a virtual comport will work with any communications software. I set the virtuall comport as com 5. when i tell a program to use com 5 it redirects to the ip address of the netport which looks like a serial port to the magix. 'm wondering if i need to use the 355a adapter.

I would. And I'd like to know if this will work. The Socket MAgix is way overpriced, anyhow.

You will still need the 355AF adapter and a DB9 to DB25 adapter to connnect the 2 together

Well.. I connected the netport to my MAGIX with a 355AF adapter and a DB9 to DB25 adapter to connnect the 2 together. I can ping, telnet & web connect the interface but can't connect to the magix. Maybe it's a matter of changing from DCE to DTE or vis versa?
I connected to the SMDR port with hyperterminal. So I know it works. When connected to the SMDR I could only see garbage but it corrosponded with calls that where completed so i know it must be smdr data.

Obviously something it not right. If I only had the time to spend a day playing with it.

Try the SMDR at 1200 baud, and the WinSPM at 2400. I know that is awfully "fast" but your modem should handle it.

I don't know Pepperz, maybe he only has a 300 baud modem! For some reason, Avaya has been under the impression that we ALL have 2400 baud modems.

As I said before, I begged and begged Bell Labs to spend the extra 50 Cents for a 9600 Baud modem, but the product manager would not do so.

I have a buddy who has a lot of SOCKET MAGIXs installed and says they are great !

I hope you can get this other gizmo to work and tell us how.

I was able to see SMDR DATA. I changed the adapter to 1200 baud and connected via IP in hyperterminal. When I tried to connect via the comport redirector i get a message telling me unable to open com 5 please check com port settings.

I guess i'm now forced to RTFM. Oh well...Iguess i'll soon be the resident NetPort expert. :)

If it can do SMDR, but not admin, one must wonder what could be wrong.

I am assuming you are able to do ADMIN with your PC, RIGHT?

Folks remember that Interactive NOrthwest makes WinSPM AND Socket Mgix. It is quite probable that WinSPM is looking for some sort of signal or interaction between the two to make WinSPM happen. The fact that you can see SMDR makes sense, as it is only a simple "one way" signal, but with WinSPM, it's communication back and forth. If someone "disassembled" the WinSPM then we would all know....... any takers?

Pepperz@newper.net

No, I think the problem resides in the adapters serial configuration.
When I use WINSPM it thinks its connecting via serial port.
It could be something as silly as a carriage return that is not being sent or i'm DCE instead of DTE.

If anyone is interested I will send the PDF on the Netport adapter.

I don't have it. Can you "lend" me a copy.

You may be able to gleen my email from one of the other posts.

Email me and I will see if I have it.

YES! I got it to work with the smdr port and the comport redirector. It turns out that when using the redirector you must put in an offset for the tcp port.

Right now i'm hooked up to the smdr port. Wed I will be back at that location and switch the adapter over to the admin port. Oh Boy i'm psched! :)

Isn't PSCHYED spelled with a Y?

Forget that, what is the cost and ordering info for this thing, I WANT ONE (or more!).

We use another easier solution. Using Duvoice VM (tried to do as above a few months ago, but it was a pain) we just install winspm on the VM computer, hook the modem up to it so it can dial in remotely. Then using VNC on the VM machine, we just take control from our main Citrix farm and connect to all 32 locations without having to spend a dime (besides the thousands for citrix that we already had).

So then all that needs to be done is buy a DuVoice VMS to run the Win SPM Remotely?
