Hi folks,
I have set up an established a VPN tunnel using IPsec policy (set up in the mmc) from a remote Windows 2000 client to my main Office VPN router (Netgear FVS318). I can ping the router and the main server on the main office LAN (after I added a static route into the router), I can also bring up the default web page on the server.
My problem is that I cannot access the any of the shares on the server or browse the network or anything like that.
I am concered that this may be due to the fact I am not "signing into" a VPN server, merely passing through the router, is there another step involved?
I have added a HOST and LMHOST entry on the local remote PC, the server's netbios name resolves ok, but I still cannot map to or browse the domain.
Should I add the remote computer name into the domain? I have tried to join the domain from the remote PC but it cannot find the domain I am trying to join.
I have found several posts on this site concerning this very problem. But none of them is very detailed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Are you following MattWray's advice and updating your security profile? (in Windows XP type 'gpupdate' at the command line).
Before I successfully connected, I could see from my logs that the the client and VPN router were communicating but not authenticating.
What is Event Viewer saying? (see early posts)

I am having the same problems connecting from Windowx XP to FVS318, can someone please send me the revised document that is being passed around.

Cheers
Ben

I, too, would really appreciate a copy of the revised document, to: edwin.floyd@wellpoint.com

I'm also having trouble establishing vpn from xp to my work network with fvs318 at the office end. Please help!Netgear knowledge base is superficial and I need some (alot) of help.
Thank you ljacksc@netscape.net

can someone please send me an updated version of the docs ?

i have been using the w2k tutorial supplied by netgear but get nowhere and need help.

Thanks

OK kids, apparently this is not an uncommon problem LOL.

I had some personal webspace doing nothing, so (if Darren doesn't object) I'm going to try to save everyone some time. I have posted the updated instructions that Darren shared with me. It's at

Make sure you read this whole post too, as there are valuable comments from Darren, MattWray and others that you need to pay attention to in addition to what's provided in the doc.

Remember, if you have success, don't forget to share what you have learned, and don't forget that Tek-Tips is MEMBER SUPPORTED (think about it - how many hours of work has this site saved you already? So send a few bucks, pounds, pesos, whatever)

Good Luck!

Tim

Good Call Tim (Shaferbus)!!

Was being inudated with requests for that document.

Everyone please follow the link given by Shaferbus if you want the updated instructions.

Also, those needing additional help, could you all post on the board rather than communicating to me personally, as others could benifit from your experiences.

Cheers folks!

I too am pulling my hair out trying to set up one of these inexpensive VPN solutions. The FVS318 is stubborn beyond beleif.
I've been trying for 4 days to establish a connection, and haven't yet.
Here is my scenario:
FVS318 acting as cable router connected to adelphia powerlink, dynamic IP assigned to dyndns.org, inside LAN sceme is default setup.

Trying to connect with WinXP Client set up according to instructions, Intel VPN Client, SSH, Softremote LT V9.0. All this from a several different computers connected to adelphia through a Linksys router with IPSEc Passthrough enabled, just like I'm supposed to.

I have almost started a tunnel, it went active on the box, but kept dropping, then I lost it all together.

If anyone has a similar configuration that works, can you send me or post the proper settings for both the router and the software, even a generic policy file I can import to softremote?
Thanks in advance guys, this is one of the worst headaches I've had in a long time.[yinyang]

I Haven't seen this line in any of my log entries:
Fri, 07/11/2003 08:01:43 - FVS318 IPsec:acceptable identity type in Phase 1 ID Payload-but it sounds encouraging.I have one entry that keeps showing up at the end of the log:- FVS318 IPsec:loglog[3] encrypted Informational Exchange message is invalid because it is for incomplete ISAKMP SA.
I've checked my keys and they all match-any ideas guys? Thanks again to Tim and Darren.Been a big help getting me this far.

I have successfully setup a connection to the FVS318 with a remote XP system running SSH Sentinel 1.4. But once i have the connection i cant see any files or shares. I have tried changing my workgroup with no joy. Does anyone know what im doing wrong ?

Thanks

DezUk,

You say you have successfully established connection, can you ping devices on the other side of the VPN? If you can then heres what to do:
In your dial-up networking connection settings:
- ensure file and print sharing is enabled
- Enable Client for Microsoft networking
- Add entries in HOSTS/LMHOSTS files to allow your remote PC to resolve IP addresses to NETBios names.
- Change the workgroup on the remote PC to the same name as the Domain you are connecting to
- Create a user account on your remote PC with the same username and password as one which can access the share you are connecting to.
- Update your security policy (type 'gpupdate' at command line)
- Map network drive using 'net use' command at the command line, you will not be able to browse to pcs on the Office LAN through network Neighbourhood (if anyone CAN do this, please let me know how!!), if the useraccount and password you have signed onto the remote PC as, matches the access list for the share you are connecting to, it should authenticate.

Hope this is of some help, all of these point have been mentioned before (in this post and other similar posts).

Did you get hold of the revised Netgear document I created? Shaferbus has kindly posted it on the internet for all to access, follow the link on his earlier post.

Regards

Darren

i can sussecfully make a connection as the vpn status shows an established connection. But i cant ping the ip of the router or the remote pc after the connection is established. Ping just times out.

Does that indicate that something isnt setup correctly ?

what enteries should i add to the hosts and lmhosts files ?

the ip im trying to connect to is 62.xx.xx.163 and its workgroup is Obvious-Tech

DezUK,

Are you using Windows XP pro on the remote PC?
Does the ping time out or do you get the message 'Negotiating IP Security'?

Need the results of the following (tests to be carried out at the remote PC):
1) Ping Internet IP address of VPN router
- if you can't get a response from that, then it is not your VPN settings giving you the problem.
2) Ping Lan address of the router - if you've entered the correct settings in your IPSEC policy this should either respond or give the message 'Negotiating IP Security', if the later, run 'gpupdate' to refresh policy.
3) Is the remote PC connected to a network/has a network card? These things could be confusing the issue, you should temporarily remove them thus eliminating them.
4) Do you have a static Internet IP address at your remote PC?

Thanks for replying Darren

1. When i ping the internet ip i get ping timeout

2. The lan ip address of the router is 192.168.0.0 and the lan ip of remote pc network is 1192.168.0.0. So wouldnt this cause a conflict. Should i change the lan ip adress of my remote pc to say 192.168.1.0 ?

3. Covered in teh above :)

4. Yes

Hey all. I am running into some of the same problems. Can someone send me the instructions to configure WinXP pro to connect to the netgear FVS138? I would really appeciate it.
dhawkins@electroglyph.com

Also, has anyone been able to get the Cisco VPN Client (v4.0.1) to connect to the fvs318? I use that client for work and would really like to be able to use it as well to connect to my FVS318 at home.
Thanks.

When I ping the IP of the router it goes through just fine.Ping on LAN address of router or any address within the LAN gives me the "negotiating IP security" message.
I'm trying to connect from a remote PC running XP home and (as you know)the home edition doesn't include the "gpupdate" option to refresh policy. Is there a work around for this? Also I have a copy of the gpupdate.exe file from Pro.What happens if I try to put that in my home edition? Is this possible? And if so how do I do it?
Feel like I'm real close here.....

Hi rundown

I checked out the web page, and it looks really hopeful. These guys seem to know what we're going through LOL. Unfortunately, I can't seem up unzip the zip file! Tried the XP compresion utility and WinZip, but both say it's not a valid archive...? Don't suppose you have your original zip file that you downloaded huh?

If you do, feel free to send it to imn_ngineer@hotmail.com. I'd love to give it a try! ANYTHING to get away from the XP client ;-)

Thanks

Tim
