I’m doing a brand new setup of a MXE ICP3300 running 10.0.0.10_2. I’m all set to do the install with the exception of a minor alarm “DSP status 5 total in system with 60% unavailable.” I believe this may have something to do with not having enough DSPs to support the compression licensees purchased which is 24. The embedded DSP is a 4 SHARC 21363 DSP which I believe should support 8 X 4 or 32 compressions sessions. The question is how many DSPs are required to support basic Telephony functions such as (digit receivers, conference, etc) and do I have enough left to support the 24 compression licensees? Also I’m confused as why it shows DSP status as “5 in system” when it is a quad DSP? Any help is appreciated.

From the MCD 4.0 Tech Handbook: The embedded DSP resources on the controller are sufficient for support of all telephony services, conferencing and vice mail. However, additional DSP's are required for G.729a compression or FAX relay (T.38). I ran your config in the Sales Workbench and it added a DSP II. (MXE basic + 24 compression channels).

The embedded dsps are not used (at all) for compression. Additional dsps are required for that (either 211161 or C55 dsps). In terms of how much is required for basic telephony, the base (embedded) dsps are sufficient based on the engineering guidelines, any additional dsps are only needed for compression and/or T.38.

As to why it says '5', any chance you have a T1/E1 combo card installed?

T1/E1 for an MXe does not have any DSP resources.

Knowledge is power, thats why we share!

I don't have a T1/E1 combo card installed but I'm thinking the system is telling me that 5 dsps are requried (two for the basic telephony and 3 to support the 24 compressions. At any rate I popped in a quad dsp 21161 and the alarm is no longer. Thanks for all the help.
