I'm trying to decide on a music on-hold source for a Nortel Option 61C PBX. I'm limited on what I'm allowed to purchase because certain requiements have been imposed upon me by my manager. I do not want anything that will incurr Royalty Fees. I prefer a MP3 or CD player. I'm interfacing to a Universal Trunk Card on the PBX. My problem is that all the TNs that come out of the PBX are hardwired to the back of patch panels. The front of the patch panels are RJ11 connections. I would need to be able to plug the output of the source device directly into the RJ11 connection on the patch panel. I would like for this to be a clean connection without having to modify something to make it work. If nothing else, I would like recommendations on a source device for music on-hold, regardless of whether or not the output can be terminated directly to a RJ11 connection. Thanks!

you will need to build or modify any device to get an output to a rj, the only concern about a cd player is the requirement for re-broadcast of copyrighted material. it's been years since i have heard of law suits over this but it did happen in a big way down in Dallas a few years back. You can buy from most paging companies canned music that is lic. for bgm. you can't put a radio station their without written premission. we use a simple cd player with a cd purchased for that reason. i removed the headset, wired to two leads to a screw down jack and patched it in. no problems and no static..

Thanks John, I appreciate the input. I figured that would be all I can do is wire from the headset jacks.

you were right on that, ld 16 new rdb with the trunk type =to mus and ld 14 new mus + the tn (one per network).. then on the route your adding mus to just answer the mus prompt yes and the next prompt will request the route you just built.. works good, last a long time.. (testing with a tone is fun, but people tend to hang up)

Although they don't charge royalties, muzak charges by the number of trunks that are being served. They install a dish on your roof and you pick the style of music, jazz, easy, classical etc....You might check them out, maybe the prices are reasonable.

Muzak works great and can add voice messages to your music on hold, like ask the manager about this or that special, but it is expensive. The cheap/simple way is just as John suggested. I've installed both and recommend the simple solution to most businesses.
