I have got Windows XP Professional, with the standard Windows Messenger that comes with it. I recently had a message saying there was a new version of Messenger available, so I clicked to download and install it. It is better, but it appears not to have replaced Windows Messenger, but to be in addition to it.

I've set Windows Messenger not to open on startup etc, but when I open up Outlook Express, for example, it automatically starts itself up (even though I've disabled the 'automatically log in to WM' in Outlook Express).

Any ideas how I can disable Windows Messenger but not MSN Messenger 5 (the one its downloaded)?

Dave.

MSN messanger 5 should replace Windows messanger that came with XP. Are you sure the old one is opening, not the new one?

I have had the same problem... The MSN messenger and the standard messenger load up, together.. The reason is "known" to Microsoft, and can be fixed by installing SP1 ! :Ö)

I´m having the same problem, and I run winXP with sp1, but I installed messenger5 after sp1

MSN 5 runs seperately from 4.7.
The idea behind this is to be able to have them both open with different accounts, something that was not possible up til now.
MSN 5 is part of MSN Explorer 8, but you get it seperately on XP.
So, you can run both, or get ride of the old one if not needed.
SP1 has no fix for that, or at least, I could not find that in the fixes list.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually - the idea is just that there *will* be (according to various posts by MVPs in MS newsgroups) a Windows Messenger (for XP) version 5 (w/ the new API), but so far that is not yet ready.. and since outlook express and possebly other programs use Windows Messenger instead of MSN Messenger (the current version 5), your best option is to stick to the 4.7 version on XP, (until ver 5 is out).

On XP, Windows Messenger has RD and Netmeeting support and so, which MSN Messenger has not... ---

The way top fix it is to "deinstall" windows messenger under XP SP1, either in add / remove programs, or under the new Microsoft management tab under Add / remove. Thats what i did, and now Only MSN messenger loads.

You don't need to remove it, just disable the service.
Windows Messenger is part of the OS, it is not the 'old' 4.7 MSN Messenger.
