Hi

Has anyone taken any of these courses?

Chrismenzies:

I have taken several of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exams, and teach all four applications at a local community college. There are lots of experts here that can help you, plus loads of info in the FAQs if you have a specific question

I've taken the Word 2003 expert and the Powerpoint exams. Even though I've used both for years and have taught them, I studed for these exams because of the new features in the 2003 versions. The exams I took focused on advance features mostly. The tough part is to make sure you do the questions exactly as they say and close all dialog boxes when you are done. In 3 weeks I will be taking the Excel exam. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Are you able to take the Expert exams straight away and become an MS Office Specialiest, or do you have to take the 'lower skilled' exams first to qualify for the Expert exams?

Chrismenzies:

You can take any exam at any time. I would suggest, though, to first thoroughly acquaint yourself with the listed objectives at this site before taking any exam!

They ARE timed, so you don't have much time to experiment with some skill you are not familiar with.

To All Instructors,

I'm currently a desktop support gal and would like to enter the world of MOS and gearing towards being a trainer/instructor down the road. Could you please give me advice on how to go about doing this? I understand the required exams I will need to pass but in order to teach at the community college as Chrsmenzies does, do you need an education degree? Do I need other credentials to become a trainer elsewhere such as for businesses or goverment organizations? I graduated with an elementary edu. degree 10 years ago and would like to combine my education background with computer technology. Any advice/info. you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Also, in your professional opinion, which Microsoft Office Specialist track am I best off taking as far as being able to land a job afterwards: 2000, XP or 2003?

thanks!

HBO5

I also teach at the local community college. Here nstructors must hold a Masters degree.

As far as which track to concentrate on, what version of Office are you currently using? If you are familiar with one in particular I would go with that one. However, another consideration is the testing center. In my experience not all testing centers offer tests in all versions. Some are only capable of giving tests for XP, some only for 2000, etc.

If you are familiar with all versions, and can find a testing center that can offer tests for 2003, why not go with the latest and greatest.

I've been wondering. On the Office Specialist exams, do you get more points if you use a shortcut key, toolbars or the drop down menus?

Doxiepup,
Thanks for your response. And sorry, I meant to name you as the college instructor and not Chrismenzies in my last message.

We use Office 2000 at work and I know the basics but am interested in learning more, looking to expand my job prospects.

I'll be sure to check which tests are offered here before I dive in. In addition to getting a masters degree, did you have to get the MS certified trainer certificate in order to teach office applications?

ras 1040:

The tests vary. Some tests have questions which might say "without using the menu,...." or "using the menu,..."

I've even taken exams in which certain icons were disabled.

The bottom line is, know more than one way to do everything!

If the question doesn't specify a certain method then it doesn't matter how you do it. You are graded on the end result, not how you got there. But remember, you ARE timed. In all versions except 2003, once you go on to the next question you cannot go back. In 2003 you can skip a question and then come back to it.
