I recently re-installed my WIN-98 SE on my AMD Desktop Computer and now

1. MS-DOS Prompt does not work:
Screen says:
“MS-DOS Prompt”
“There is not enough memory available to run this
program. Quit one or more
programs, and then try again”

I have the command.com file on two places:
- C:\command.com and
- C:\Windows\Command.com

I have the same set-up on my old 586 computer, and
there the C: prompt works.

2. Work-around an the AMD Computer::
go to Start – Shutdown – Restart in MS-DOS mode.
Only then the C:\Command prompt works.

3. This is not the solution ; I need to be able to
access the C: prompt from Windows.

What shall I do ?
Thank you for your help.

Charles

4. Computer spec: AMD Processor 1.93 GHz Athlon XP
2400
OS: Win 98 SE
768 MB of RAM
Hard Disk Seagate 160 GB
Networked with 586 Comp. & DELL
Laptop WIN-XP
(on both these computers the C:
prompt work)

Did you do a clean reinstall - or over the top of existing?
What do your autoexec.bat and config.sys files look like (is there anything large loading into memory at start up)?

Thank you Wolluf for your answer.
1. I did a clean reinstall
with format C:; partition of seagate 160 GB
(Master) C: 80 GB and E: 80 GB.
plus a second hard disk Samsung, 40 GB as D: (slave)

2) No large loading at startup, it did start up right away.
Drive C: only 10 GB used for OS and programs
Drive E: Data only, not even 3 GB/
Drive D: empty (later on, will be used as true backup)

3) Autoexec.bat: looks like this:
REM: Autoexec.bat for AMD - Mar.15,05
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:pROGRA~1...
...\ATITEC~1\ATICON~1
LH DOSKEY

Your comments as to how to fix this problem would be appreciated. I like to make batchfiles to transfer files from one computer to another and now with this problem with
DOS prompt not working from Windows, it makes it awkward....

Thank you again: Charles.

If you haven't already, go to Start, Run, type in msconfig. When it opens click Advanced near the bottom right of the General tab. Put a check mark in the Limit memory to box and fix the setting to 512. You will have to reboot.

Post back with your results of the change.

It's a good day when you learn something

Hi DanPenny,
You have no idea how much I appreciate your smart solution to my problem. I did exactly what you suggested and voilà, the DOS-Mode command prompt under Windows magically reappeared and works like a charm!
Thank you very much Dan, you are super and you deserve three stars.
